Why SKY is going to lose millions more customers.

The short answer is greed. from them and habit from niaive customers with more money than sense!  But apart from SKY being reliant on their Basic package to gat Sports to lock people into onerous contracts, many have bitten the bullet and left SKY never to return. Why is SKY so expensive?  because it believes mistakenly that it offers something better than the rest,  that may have been correct ten years ago but no more.  Forgetting Sports for a minute, SKY's other channels are no better than Netflix, Paramount, Apple or the free excellent ITVx.

I left Sky over a year ago. they had become just like the USA whose big Corp knows best attitude is the American way. As far as I care now, I don't need Sports,  can get it all mwithout bpaying SKY £20 plus a month on top of their lock in SKY plans.  Leaving SKY has enriched my bank balance by way over £500 a year,  that's good in 2024/5........Bye bye SKY, nice knowing I will never have to deal with you again. Happy 2025!

Because they have large expenses.

Although, having announced a loss of £224m I doubt it's going to get cheaper...

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Peacock lost the NBCU division a couple of billion dollars over the same period, which Comcast seems pretty sanguine about.

I have just done the same having been with them ages.  So pushy trying to get me to stay. Can't wait to give the box back, and a healthier bank balance.

After 23 years of loyalty, I've cancelled! I stayed for the last few years due to them having the F1 but it's not worth £50 a month. I'll watch it down the pub instead and at least I can get merry while watching my team lose.

Although with the cost of pints these days you may find you are spending more money in the pub than you would paying for Sky.

You get the content that would have been on Eurosport before it closed because Warner Bros wanted to make that content premium under the TNT Sports name. Eurosport has gone from the UK. You can also get TNT through Sky.

Just sharing this in case people read this post and think "I've lost Eurosport and if I leave Sky I can get it back".

Re: Why SKY is going to lose millions more customers.

I was paying £100p/m for the basic package, which is mostly freeview channels and no sports channels at all. I enjoy the F1, but not willing to pay the extra bundle charge to view, so I cancelled and have not missed it at all.

£1200 a year pay increase for me.

Similar to me. They've got to wake up at some point and do something, especially as they're moving to a streaming service like all the others but still just as expensive as Q. Corporate, American greed!

Re: Why SKY is going to lose millions more customers.

Listen to Simon Jordan on Talksport and he makes alot of sense when discussing Sky.

Sky are losing loads of customers due to their Sports packages being expensive. As a result Firesticks and other pirated streams have vastly increased in popularity, so Sky will probably never get all these customers back. This then effects what Sky can bid in the future for the Premier League rights.

Personally I feel long term the Premier League will take control of the TV rights, and if that happens Sky will face new challenges.

Re: Why SKY is going to lose millions more customers.

@RDR the leagues would have to charge quite a bit to make that economically viable compared to the current auctioning process I reckon. I could see them introducing a service that supplements the existing services rather than outright replacing it,

F1 TV Pro is a good demo of a league doing their own service but there's rumours that Netflix are going to bid for the US rights and replace it there, which might be a sign that that model isn't as effective as it might seem. And I think their close long term relationship with Sky in Europe has meant they've not bothered trying to launch it here either, they'd make less money and have higher costs.

The PL has always had control of the rights, because it's their product.  They choose to accept over a billion pounds per season from Sky for permission to broadcast a subset of fixtures (which is why the founding clubs choose to break away in the first place)
