If you don't want Sky TV and only want the Sky broadband you can phone Sky and request to cancel the TV part of your subscription. Note you will only be able to do this if you are outside your 18 month minimum term contract for the TV subscription.

To cancel your TV subscription, if you’re out of contract you’ll need to give Sky the required 31 days notice. The T&Cs state you can’t cancel when still in a minimum term deal unless Sky agree. If they agree you’ll have to pay the remainder of your discounted term.

Select ‘Need more help’ at the bottom of the following link which will lead to contact details.
https://www.sky.com/help/articles/cancel-sky-tv#contact-leave

If you cancel correctly you should receive a confirmation email from Sky.

If you’re cancelling Sky Q don’t forget to keep you proof of posting indefinitely when you return the equipment. Return packaging will be sent out towards the end of your notice period.

'Essentials' is not subscription channels.

The subscription you pay is for the hardware (recording facility etc.) and not for the programmes themselves.

If you do not have a subscription then you must return the hardware.

Yes: TV Essentials reception is the PSB channels (1 to 5) and the other Free To Air satellite channels: almost exactly the same service could be received through a Freesat receiver at no monthly cost.

The subscription charge from Sky basically permits recording/playback, on-demand / catch-up (of the FTA services) and (on a Q box) on-board app hosting.
