My current insurer was cheaper than Sky Protect but now informs me I won't be covered if my Sky equipment is more than 10 years old.
is the only way to get my upgrade date from the initial sky box I had, by ringing customer service?
sorry if this sounds an obvious answer but wondered if it should be on my account details on the app as don't want to get hassled for an upgrade in a phonecall.

You should be able to find a more recent, used Sky+HD box (not later than 2015) on auction sites such as ebay.
