Mac book pro scam

Hi some advice needed. I have been having issues with Sky for a while now tried to end my package as out of contact in the summer but kept getting cut off and life just got in the way.

I received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Sky I have also had genuine phone calls like this from Sky so I didn't give any details but was informed she could sort my package which I was okay with. Confirmed my postcode and email.

she then said a colleague would contact me to give me a promo code for my Sky app for an iPad for the inconvenience. This phone call followed and I had to pay the postage which was £12 no bank details given was all done through the app as if an order but no cost associated. I wouldn't have given it another thought until my tv package didn't come through. I have since spoken to Sky given them the names the numbers times of the call etc...the person who rang knew my whole package knew how much I paid knew my address and my email. Sky have said today there is no record of the calls and nothing on my account other than me ordering a MacBook Pro! The lady at Sky has opened an investigation and given me a sky id...she told me to wait for delivery of the MacBook which arrived today but I am not wanting a huge bill for something I actually don't want. The lady at Sky said someone will look into this and call me back she said I won't be charged but respectfully I do not have any faith in skys communications prior to this and have been subject to hidden charges before. Ideally I want to return it and have nothing more to do with Sky regardless of the scam

I believe this to be and yes I am a class one idiot I never ever do anything like this but due to going to town on the initial phone call due to spending so much time trying to end Sky i genuinely thought the least they could do was give me a hamper...lesson learned!

I plan to call Sky again to say I have received the MacBook but I could cry at the thought of going through this all with another person and get no further forward. I am assuming I will end up getting some legal advice around this.   Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi @A1HJO

You aren’t talking to Sky by posting here. If you are new to the forum then welcome to the Community which is predominantly made up of Sky customers helping other Sky customers which includes additional help from customers who are Superusers like myself.

Scammers try to obtain sufficient information to be able to order these expensive mobile devices in your name which Sky innocently deliver to you.

The scammers would then recontact you (again claiming to be Sky) saying they have made a mistake and for you to send it to a (non Sky) address. If you did that they then have the device and you have the bill.

They are very cunning. They may send packaging to post the item (to them) or might even send a 'courier' to collect it. see these links...

https://www.sky.com/help/articles/account-takeover

With any calls from 'Sky' (especially unexpected calls) if the caller asks for your previously agreed telephone password to confirm you're the account holder (which I would expect a genuine Sky agent to do) initially give an INCORRECT one on purpose. If the caller doesn't challenge it then you know it will be a scam call.

I would suggest contacting Sky again through an approved number and ask for packaging to be sent to return it to them.

@A1HJO

Disregard the last paragraph on my post and now engage in the private chat with Sky that @-Heather- has arranged.

@A1HJO

Be aware that the scammers are now likely to be very persistent in attempting to convince you to 'return' the device to an address which they control: this may well include booking a doorstep pickup by an otherwise legitimate company.
