Feeling ripped off

I phoned sky today to ask to change my package because I couldn't afford £110 a month I wanted a basic package I can't afford no more than £55 a month as I was out of contact I didn't think this would be a problem I was told by the advisor I had to have the sky signature package and I couldn't have anything else which I found strange all she could  do was reduce the cost to £84 but for another 2 year contract of sky signature but I still can't afford this so I'm wondering if I can cancel the contract do I have a 14 day cooling off period on a new contract ?

The basic package on Q is TV Essentials (free to air satellite service plus app access and recording/playback)

Confusingly there's also Essential TV on Sky Stream (some Sky subscription channels plus Netflix)

Were you within a minimum contract term when you had this conversation?

That amount would indicate you have additional packs such as Sports/Movies?  If you did switch to essentials then you cannot have these - Signature is a pre-requisite.

£55 for a £110 package is almost certainly an unrealistic discount target.

If you couldn't afford £84 why did you accept it?

Re: Feeling ripped off

I asked to take off movies I said I wanted the basics I don't want movies I just want the cheapest package which I said multiple times she told me that the only package I could have was sky signature I don't know why I accepted it I thought that was my only option as she told me it was my only option but you're right I shouldn't have accepted it.

Terminology is important: Sky Signature is indeed the lowest cost subscription package which includes Sky-branded and other non-free-to-air channels on the Sky Q platform.

TV Essentials doesn't include subscription channels, and Essential TV isn't on Sky Q.

@Marc39

if you are paying £84 for only Sky Signature then something is very wrong.

What do your future bills say ?

Re: Feeling ripped off

I do get broadband as well think that included in the sky signature package but £84 does seem a lot considering new customers get much better deals.

My future bills are £94 Feb with a one off £10 connection charge no idea what that is for then it's £84 a month going forward.

I'm going to see if I can cancel my contract and I'll switch to another provider.

Broadband and TV are as such not 'linked'.  You can have one without the other.  (So you could cancel TV and negotiate a broadband only deal)

The £10 is an 'admin' charge for a new deal.  (I don't agree with these either - but they are covered contractually.  Indeed, I'm surprised you weren't charged more as they are often 'per discount')

New customer prices are generally only available to new customers.  That's why switching providers will almost certainly get a cheaper deal (but remember any new provider will do the same at their renewal)

Attracting new customers is harder than keeping them...

No, it's not, but broadband plus subscription television at that combined price is somewhat more reasonable than television alone.
