Lucy Maud Montgomery created Anne of Green Gables in 1908. The story of the bright-eyed red-headed orphan who was supposed to be a boy quickly became a classic. There are six books featuring Anne and a further three about her family. This Canadian series is fabulous and Seasons 1&2 are available on Netflix. Season 3 arrives next year.
This is described as a reimagination of the story. Season 1 sticks quite closely to the books while Season 2 deviates completely and is slightly less appealing for it.
For those unfamiliar with the story it is set in the late 19th century, the novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who was mistakenly sent to two middle-aged siblings; Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, originally intending to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island.
It is the perfect curl up and watches over Christmas because at least season one, true to the book is charming and wonderful helped by perfect casting, Amybeth McNulty is a perfect Anne, Matthew played by R H Thomson is absolutely superb in this role and Geraldine James is as good as it gets as Marilla.
Watch it. It’s brilliant!
