Member review: Polar

The film Polar is about a soon to retire assassin, who has been targeted by his greedy boss, who sends a squad of ruthless killers to take him out!

Sounds familiar?

Yes, there are many films with a similar storyline, is Polar any different?

Yes and No! The difference with this film is that it is made up of a patchwork of more famous films action scenes.

The opening scene of the film is reminiscent of the opening scene of a Dirty Harry film with death by a sniper at the poolside!

The main character played by Mads Mikkelsen (Le Chiffre in Casino Royale), is a character based on Eastwood's Harry Callaghan, and Keanu Reeves John Wick, and many other quiet rugged unshaven hero type characters.

The bad guy in the film is the greedy boss played by the comedian Matt Lucas, although a role you wouldn't expect him to play, when you first realise who the actor is it became quite comical, there were parts of the character he played were quite believably brutal, no more than in the torture scene, based on the Bond torture scene in Casino Royal.

As you watch the film you begin to realise that many scenes are from other films, watch out for the beheading scene similar to Kill Bill, or the familiar close quarter shoot and fight action from John Wick films.

There were many others, and with the storyline all so familiar, I found myself looking for the next reference to a famous scene, rather than getting into the weak plot line.

All in all the film was an enjoyable tongue in the cheek action movie, with plenty of action, gore and sexual scene's. And of course, the predictable, good guy ending!

What more would you want?

I would give this film 2 stars.
