On fuller viewing, can't see any of the dreaded HLG artefacts so we are good to go.
well done, sky!

It's saying UHD HDR
looks ok sounds ok (I'm not a tech boffin to know exactly how great the HDR is plus knowing about the various sound options too.)
plus no ads
so very happy and extremely surprised.
this has to go down as a well done to Sky.
credit where it's due.

Posted by a Sky employeeSo what did everyone think of The Last of Us?
Personally I loved it, avid player of the games and I was really surprised at how accurate it was - from costuming to the set. Although I did see an article asking why there isn't much crouching done by Joel 😂 According to Pedro, it's because '55-year-olds can’t crouch for more than like three minutes! Tops! And then their back gives out.'

Am I the only one who was put off by the awful soap opera effect on the Sky Q UHD download? I thought I'd missed a setting on my TV but it seems like the frame rate was at 50fps, is that across the board then for TV shows/film as well as sport?

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreI didn't notice that. You sure your TV isn't doing some sort of frame interpolation?
No, movies on Sky are always at 25fps. God knows what they'll do with Avatar 2 though 😉

I'd already adjusted settings in my LG TV for Sky Q's input and was happy with them, but it was clearly apparent on the UHD download and not the HD one or anything else playing from Sky Q. I don't know what other settings I could've missed. Even the wife piped up and said it was off-putting and she can't tell the difference between SD and HD 😂

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreThe TV will store different settings for UHD (and then again for HDR) that are only available when the input is that signal. But it sounds like you checked it live when you had the UHD HDR version playing?
It will say 50Hz because the signal is that but each frame is sent twice. I'm 99% sure it's 25fps on my TV. Just had a quick look to check again, on the fast moving scene when they are going through town in the truck and it looked fine.

You're right, it will have different settings for UHD on that input - I need to double check those. I'm sure this is a problem at my end

What I want to know is when will sky for 4K juat stop being cheap and transition from HLG to Dolby Vision HDR for on demand and for once start doing correct framerate instead of on demand everything 25fps. They charge enough and this should be number one issue to fix. It be nice in 2025 sky loose hbo and max launch over here but I am worried the new boss of warner discovery this might not happen. Sky is no longer fit for US produced content.

I have to agree to an extent.
Presentation of the 4K LOU was much better than the disastrous HLG presentation of HOTD - much better indeed.
However, a download of the HBO 4K presentation was better still - brighter and punchier.
So, improving no doubt, but could be better.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreYeah I agree they should have HDR10 or DV on streamed content, and at native framerate. I won't hold my breath though and luckily didn't have a problem with HOTD's HLG encoding on my TV.

Until Sky turn off the satellites and switch to a fully streamed service they will continue to speed up their 24fps content to 25fps and use HLG HDR.
The 4K Dolby Vision version of The Last Of Us is noticeably superior to the Sky version, the same as House of the Dragon was. It's why I choose to subscribe directly with HBO Max and access the stream directly on my Apple TV 4K box. Yes, it's an extra expense but I care about getting the best possible quality for certain content and unfortunately Sky doesn't always provide it.
