Believe me as a season ticket holder to a PL club there is A LOT of time in matches where the ball is out of play and absolutely nothing is going on. The televisual experience at least fills these "dead air" moments for example where it takes a team well over a minute to walk over to the corner flag to and then a further 20-30 seconds to actually take a corner.

Try watching an American Football match in real time ; )

It's essentially a three hour beer & snacks consumption event occasionally interrupted by some sport...

That's predominantly why I've never been able to get into any of the US sports 😀

The shock comes when you're used to watching the 'highlights' coverage, and then consume an actual match (average for the NFL apparently being 192 minutes)

Famously the Wall Street Journal calculated that the ball is actually shown moving for a whole 11 minutes, with an hour of advertising and 60% of the remaining air time displaying other things.

The average 'play' lasts four seconds ; )

When 'watching' American football, I tend to have a crossword or puzzle book at the ready as a focus for all the stoppages

  • @daveNOSMissing the point. I only subscribe to Sport content so that I can watch live football. All the non-live crap doesn't interest me, I can get that online for free.

'very rare for any action to be missed by a replay'... Untrue. Have no problem with directors filling dead all time, but far too frequently the crowd is heard reacting to action while we watch anything but the game, and too often returning to live just as there's an approach on goal, with us having no idea how it developed.
