No 4K for Euro 2024 & Champions League Final...

I've no interest in sport whatsoever but for those that are, and pay a fortune for it to be in 4K with HDR, this may be of interest:

Nobody pays 'a fortune' to watch the Euros. The coverage is split across BBC and ITV and costs no more than the licence fee. 

Even if production were in native UHD/HDR, it would only be a handful of matches via iPlayer as ITV hasn't bothered with it due to no return versus HD.

For the Euros yes, for the champions league final that might annoy some people I guess which is mainly on pay TV throughout the world, so I'm sure people paying extra for 4K content would be annoyed UEFA can't be bothered to broadcast it in 4K

Seems a strange one. I know not all broadcasters are equipped, ready or even interested in 4k but I thought all the camera equipment at this level would now be capable and there as an option at least.

Makes you wonder if (for sport at least) this is 3D all over again.

Clearly it's UEFA cutting the production costs of the champions league final and the Euros.

i guess as UEFA don't explicitly sell the rights for 4K content and it's just the rights to the broadcast, they have realised they are spending more money than they need to in order to fulfil the broadcasting commitments.

In the US a lot of the live HDR or DV stuff is only 1080p. As long as the stream has good bandwidth - which a lot of stuff on UK satellite does not - then most will not see much difference.

As per this link it will be 1080p HDR not 4K unless individual broadcasters upscale it....

I assume HDR will only be on iPlayer unless anyone knows if freeview or bbc/itv via the puck can handle hdr?

  Changing the subject slightly but sticking with sport, we also don't have any real interest in sport, but we do sometimes tune in to the Olympics to watch the more obscure stuff. I see that the whole of the Olympics will be broadcast in native 4K which should be good. If I recall correctly, I believe the last Olympics in Tokyo was also broadcast this way.

Paris 2024 is the first Olympics to be produced entirely in 4K, but that doesn't necessarily mean we'll get 4K broadcasts or streams for everything in the UK.

Yes, I'm sure we'll get some 4K streams for some events. There are probably various broadcasting/streaming deals in place for specific broadcasters to get some events in 4K.

I think France will probably benefit the most, seeing as they are pretty much pioneers of free to air UHD broadcasting...

Not confirmed but it is suspected Eurosport may keep the 4K coverage for themselves and not allow third parties to use it to give Eurosport a usp.......

Wimbledon has been confirm for bbc on iPlayer as 4K on centre court....

Yes, I'm sure there'll be a lot of chest puffing from the various sport broadcasters around the world about who can and can't have the 4K Olympics streams...

Some of the US streamers are being quite cagey about it, promising unsurpassed coverage, 24/7, interactivity, etc, etc but not mentioning anything about resolution. 

The good old BBC continues with its now standard iPlayer 4K Centre Court at Wimbledon and 4K Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury... they might get some 4K Olympics but who knows...?

Poland v Netherlands looking good in HDR on iPlayer via a Sky puck.  Not sure how you would find out if its HD or UHD.  Compares favourly with Sky HDR output.
