switch Sky talk to other voip provider

I just ordered Sky  FF Broadband and Talk.

Not intending to use phone for outgoing calls, just for incoming.

If at some point during the contract I wish to switch talk, including my existing number , to a seperate voip provider such as A&A , is rhis possible and leave broadband as is with Sky?

Thanks

Essentially no, because Sky is not technically a 'VoIP provider'.  Sky Talk Internet Calls uses VoIP but is intrinsically linked to Sky Broadband.

So far as I'm aware, Sky can only port a telephone number when a customer's broadband/landline service is switched to another ISP. They're a combined package. They can't port a service to a native VOIP provider.

The way I understand it is that if you port your landline number to a&a, you can attach your VoIP phone to an ethernet port on your router and (after configuration) use their VoIP service. Your sky phone service should be able to allocate a new number to your skytalk account (so you'll have 2 numbers available effectively).

I'm not sure this is the case?

Seems if i try and port landline number it will cancel my current broadband/talk contract?

That's what I would expect.

Re: switch Sky talk to other voip provider

If you have broadband and not FTTP, sky need a working landline (copper connection carries your phone and broadband). I believe your phone service supplier can allocate a new number to your line when you port out your number, subsequently keeping the line open for services - I'm sure it's 'doable' but needs supplier assistance so as not to screw the whole thing up.

All phone suppliers have to release a phone number for porting upon request.  Sky may have to temporarily break your broadband connection on the day your porting takes place but should be able to reactivate the service on the newly issued number, leaving your ported number open to use via another VoIP service, via an ethernet port on your router.

I have FTTP

Re: switch Sky talk to other voip provider

As far as I'm aware, FTTP does not tie your landline to your fiber connection and therefore, porting numbers wouldn't cease your fiber service. . . it'd be different if you were on broadband/copper phoneline.

If with sky, you should be able to ask for a new line number as you are to port the old landline to another service provider.

They may charge you a one-off fee of under £20 (industry standard charges are about £10-15 I believe) for your new skytalk number.

Once ported, you can get an ata adapter for an analogue landline phone, input your new supplier VoIP account info and connect the ata to the ethernet port - with your skytalk phone connected to the 'phone' port on the router.

Re: switch Sky talk to other voip provider

NOTE: landline numbers must normally be port requested within a month of changing suppliers. Your former supplier will have 'ceased' your line or number but it can be 'renumbered' within a month (sometimes longer) as it will then be made available for new customer reissue.
