Any standard DECT cordless phone or a corded phone will work. BT's phones designed to work with their Digital Voice service won't work, I'm afraid,  as you've discovered.

I've just moved from BT to Sky and as stated the BT phones no longer work so had to buy some standard phones. I think I should have been told prior to switch over. As it does not seem fair and no information was given prior to change over. Little old ladies are going to be a bit confused by all this incompatible technology. If you are taking their phone service they should send you a phone with the router so you are not stuck without a phone.

@Sportingchancer

Sky have never provided a landline phone. They don't manufacture any and everyone's preference to the specs of a landline would be different anyway ie; answerphone, call-blocking, number of additional handsets.

Have you asked BT why they didn't warn you about the incompatibility of their handsets?

@Sportingchancer I don't think you can reasonably expect Sky to take responsibility for alerting you about compatibility issues with competitors' products and services, even if they happened to know. As with all services and products you buy it's a case of 'buyer beware'., I'm afraid.

The BT/EE Digital Voice handset do state the following:

"ONLY WORKS WITH BT AND EE DIGITAL VOICE SERVICE"

These BT/EE Digital Voice handsets are specifically made for BT/EE's own voice service.

As stated by other a normal corded or DECT based phone unit and set will be fine that's not specific to a providers voice service.

On the scale of an ISP like Sky that would be hundreds of thousands of handsets sent out every year, the vast majority of which would never be used.
