Switching voip landline and broadband to two different providers

Hi,

I am switching my broadband from SKY to another provider that doesn't provide a landline for international calls and my landline to yet another provider. I have found myself in a dilemma because if I switch my landline first (as originally recommended by SKY customer service) it seems I will lose broadband until the broadband is switched. On the other hand, if I switch my broadband service first (as recommended by SKY later) then there is a risk that I might lose my landline telephone number.

The last person I spoke to at SKY said that he had discussed it with his manager and they both agreed that the only way to be 100% certain to keep my phone number was to switch it first and do without any broadband for a couple of days.

How were they both so certain? Because the Googled it! I kid you not!

Can anybody provide any real insight here, other than just Googling? And what are the mechanics?

Thanks in advance

Re: Switching voip landline and broadband to two different providers

I have just learned that provisioning of my new FTTP broadband service from Highland and Lothian Broadband does not imply the termination of my service from SKY. So, I can have two broadband services running at the same time! This means that I can initiatiate the phone number port, which on completion will implicitly disconnect my SKY broadband, after the FTTP service is provisioned. In the interim period, I can run my landline off SKY and everything else off the new broadband.

@TonyAberdour  Am I correct in thinking you're wanting to port your telephone number to a VOIP provider who not an ISP?

Also who are you switching to for both?

As this could simplify things or complicate things based on your new provider.

I am switching my broadband to Highland And Lothian broadband because of a special offer they made me. However, they do not provide a VOIP service capable of making or receceiving international calls - at any price. I have, therefore, found a VOIP provider called Ponely that provides a VOIP service through an adapter.  Phoenly, however, provides no internet service.

Typo. The VOIP provider is Phonely.co.uk. They are not an ISP.

Note that's only the case if Highland and Lothian are laying their own optical fibre.  If they use the national Openreach network then it's a 'switch' and Sky Broadband would cease.

Edit: as they are offering symmetrical connection at up to 2 Gbs then it has to be private fibre, not Openreach.
