I want to make VOIP calls via my computer

Hi,

I am working from home, and struggling with my large phone on the desk and even more by the corded headset. I have a new bluetooth headset, but it only attaches via a dongle, and the phone have a USB cable.

I know I can make the phone work with an adapter but it is still a month out for delivery so I thought I could use the computer instead - but how?

I don't want to make iphone calls via wifi, I want to use VOIP protocol.

Anyone help?

TIA

I suspect USB functionality is rather rare on analogue handsets: that's about a century-wide gap in technology...

USB is by definition a digital interface requiring processing power to operate.

I believe some businesses-oriented handsets have a headphone/microphone mini-jack socket, but most such telephone hardware will be digital rather than analogue and a digital phone won't work with a Sky Hub.

I'm not sure what this has to do with Sky?

To use a VOIP service, you'll need to sign up with a VOIP provider, and connect your phone to one of the ethernet ports on your router.

I have a call package with Sky, so they provide VOIP thru my broadband

I'm not sure what the adaptor is that you mentioned in your first post, then.

The only connection to Sky's Internet calls service (Sky VOIP) is via the phone socket at the back of your broadband Hub.

A,standard phone is required. An IP phone won't work with Sky VOIP.

The Sky Talk service is VoIP over the internet but gets converted to analogue by the ATA behind the phone port on the Sky Broadband Hub and Max Hub.  It's not possible to use Sky Talk with an actual VoIP handset or from a VoIP app on a computer because the required software configuration has been baked into those Hub models and is otherwise undocumented.

Re: I want to make VOIP calls via my computer

I already use a normal phone from the hub that's what I want a work around for so I can use a wireless headset, but the landline (voip) phone doesn't have a USB port but I have got a RJ9 to USB on order (the RJ9 part plugs in to the socket that you normally plug the handset in) the wireless headset works off a USB dongle, which I hope and pray will work but it's coming from outside UK so big delay. And if it doesn't work, I'm looking at the alternative of making VOIP calls thru the computer like they do in call centres (but I don't want to do it thru my iPhone)

Ah ok, thx for that. I guess option 2 maybe to buy a landline phone with a USB port if you can get them and the adapter doesn't work!

You could do that with a subscription service from any real VoIP provider as long as they provide either their own app or a configuration to work with other software.

However you cannot do so with Sky Talk Internet Calls.

@HMC  Have you asked your employer if they provide a softphone app for your pc, assuming it's someone who employs you.

If not and you're working for yourself then I'd suggest looking at a VOIP Phone provider where you can use either a deskphone or softphone  on a pc, your bluetooth headset would connect to your pc in such cases.

Sadly self employed, this is proving much bigger issue than I expected?

@HMC  In that case as a Self employed person it's worth noting Sky broadband is for domestic use.

That aside I would highly recommend a dedicated business VoIP phone service that gives you the option of a pc softphone.

Do a search on Google you'd be surprised at how little it can cost for such a setup.

Yealink T46G

I wanted to use a wireless headset and my current Panasonic which works fine with my Sky Max Hub, doesn't have bluetooth capacity, so I purchased a refurbished Yealink T46G which is supposed to be connected either by wifi (but you have to buy the adapter seperately) or via ethernet - try as I might, I cannot get a dial tone and I have tried a different cable and different port - does anyone have any ideas please?

TIA

Have you signed  with a native VOIP provider? An IP phone such as this won't work with Sky VOIP as we've discussed before.
