Cancel sky pay as you talk before our switch has even happened?

On Friday my dad phoned sky to upgrade his broadband to superfast fibre.

Checking the contract he realised that he also has now got sky pay as you talk.

He says he doesn't want that, he just wants the fibre broadband and wants the phone to remain on BT.

I read the contract for cancelling sky pay as you talk and I'm just confused.

Right to cancel
You have the right to cancel your order for Sky Talk without giving any reason any time up to 14 days ("cooling off period") from the later of: (i) delivery of your Wireless Router; (ii) activation; or (iii) receipt of the relevant terms and conditions for that product/service. Sky may offer an enhanced cooling off period from time to time which we will advise you of at the time of your purchase

If you cancel a contract during your cooling off period we will refund to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery of any equipment you ordered e.g. your Wireless Router ("Equipment"), but if you requested a service to begin during the cooling off period, you must pay us an amount which is proportionate to the service provided up to the point you cancelled your order, including any chargeable Sky Talk calls you have made. You will not receive a refund for any one-off fees for activation or set up services if you cancel a service after activation.

On the Myskyid app it says the fibre starts on 24th May. I can't find anything that says when this sky pay as you talk will start.

We haven't gotten any equipment yet and I'm assuming the contract with sky doesn't start until 24th May. But I'm not sure what to do.

Do I ring up sky and tell them we don't want sky pay as you talk, we just want sky fibre? But will that be allowed?

We also have sky broadband boost on the contract, which I don't think we need either.

By default the monthly price advertised for any 'Sky Broadband' product will include 'line rental' (essentially an obsolete concept, but quoted for regulatory purposes: it's the cost of a data bearer circuit) and a voice call service which charges rather a lot per minute for any outbound calls made.

Having broadband from one ISP and a voice service from a different telco is historically possible, but increasingly anomalous.

Like most providers Sky no longer provide a copper based broadband only service. It's bundled with a landline service.- you have to have both. The Pay as you Talk package is the default call package where all calls are charged, but Sky do offer various phone package for which you pay a monthly subscription to gain inclusive calls.

By the way, I'm not sure that BT will provide a landline service while broadband is with another provider.

While older people in particular have a historic attachment to British Telecom as a brand, it's important to understand in this context that's just another ISP in a very competitive market.  'On BT' isn't really a thing (although the shareholders of BT Group would very much like the public to continue to think it is ; )

Re: Cancel sky pay as you talk before our switch has even happened?

Yeah I've been trying to figure it out all last night and it seems that you need to have a "sky talk" package of some kind if you want sky fibre broadband.

My dad's Internet is originally sky broadband unlimited, it was set up 16 years ago. We have a BT line with it ever since.

I noticed on the monthly statement that he has been paying £5 for "supplement for not having sky line rental".

Honestly it sounds better to change to sky. The sky pay as you talk says you only pay when you talk. We hardly ever use the phone. Maybe the odd taxi but every thing else is mobile. The only calls we get coming in is there are doctor related or its sales people/ scammers.

I don't understand line rental. My dad's latest BT phone line statement says he is paying £28.40 for phone line rental and then £7.03 for this 500 min calling plan.  So a total of £36.26 a month.

But I'm not sure how much is sky pay as you talk is and the sky rental price.

I came across by googling that sky rental is £18.99 a month but I don't know if that is true. I'm so confused by what we have to pay for sky pay as you talk and if that includes rental.

Like do we pay £18.99 a month (for rental) and then any calls we make will be the sky pay as we talk cost?

Re: Cancel sky pay as you talk before our switch has even happened?

Yeah I just saw another community post with someone asking about whether she had to pay £18.99 for sky rental or if its included in the fibre broadband deal/ package.

On my contract it says "sky pay as you talk: £00.00 a month.

Line rental: £00.00 a month"

So does that mean the line rental is included in our fibre package deal already? And we don't have to pay BT a phone line rental anymore?

That should be the case with any currently advertised broadband product, yes.

Unfortunately I don't know if cancelling the current rental from BT would have unexpected effects, though.
