Can I take landline number to new house?

We'll be moving house next month and we're not even sure we want to have a landline phone anymore, or if we should just order a SOGEA line (for broadband provision only; no dial tone for outgoing and no number for incoming calls).

The real question though, is this:

We've had our current landline number for almost 40 years and ported it over with us when we moved from BT to Sky for both broadband and calls. If we decide on keeping a landline service when we move house, we'll be staying within the Preston area code (01772) but moving out of Broughton exchange area (01772 86xxxx) to Ribbleton exchange area (01772 79xxxx).

I know it was always possible to take your number with you if you were staying on the same exchange but can a number be moved from one exchange area to a different one?

To the best of my knowledge, it's possible in principle to port your phone number whether it's moving within the same exchange or to another one. There are a number of posts here, however, indicating possible prolems when porting your number from a line with standard calls to one with internet calls and vice versa. I don't know how common a problem that is.

Thanks for your reply Mark.

Neither the exchange we're leaving, nor the one we're going to, are set up for Internet calling in this context so that shouldn't be a problem for us.

Cheers mate.
