You can't have Multiscreen as we know it on Sky+, with Sky Q.

Sky+ has Multiroom, where all the boxes have a cable from the dish and an individual hard drive

The Q version is Multiscreen: the Mini boxes have a wireless link with the main box, and it's that box which has the dish feed and the only hard drive.  Mini boxes record by sharing the main box hard drive space.

Re: Why upgrade from Sky HD+ to Sky Q?

Timmy………… this is what I assumed SkyQ would be. So a mini box in the kitchen would connect via Wi-Fi to a Sky Q box in the lounge, yes? Sky must have phoned me half a dozen times offering me SkyQ, suggesting a mini box for my kitchen set up, which is currently a non-smart 14 " TV, physically connected by cable to the Sky HD+ box in the lounge, and controlled by magic eye. But how would a mini box in the kitchen speak to my non-smart TV? Sky haven’t explained this.

I keep telling Sky that I don’t want to change because a mini box in the kitchen means taking up another power socket, which is inconvenient. They don’t seem to be getting the message or they don’t understand, one or the other.

Re: Why upgrade from Sky HD+ to Sky Q?

Thank you for your prompt reply. Whatever it's called, I was told, just now by a Sky technician, that people with a Q mini box can't record from it. Please can you tell me if that's true? I mean, if they can access the recordings from the main box on their mini box, surely they can vice versa instruct the main box to record, via the mini box? I'd be very grateful to know. I was on the phone for over an hour with them this morning to no avail. Thanks again.

@Kate30101  All recordings are made and stored on the main box but accessible via a mini

afaik you can set a recording from a mini box

edit I've just checked you can do everything associated with recordings via a mini except watch uhd recordings as noted by @Daniel0210

@StevieD54

Yes your understanding is correct - mini boxes connect to the main box usually via wifi, although they can also connect via ethernet cables.

a SKY Mini would require an HDMI connection to your Tv, although minis can use a 3rd party cable to use Analogue AV connections (either RCA/phono or SCART)

Although as @Mark39 confirms you could consider an HDMI to RF converter although this is not that usual.

It does sound like switching to SKY Q is not for you, until you have a failure

Except UHD recordings which aren't viewable on a mini box.

With SKY Q the main box stores all recordings - although they can be set to record from a mini box

All the recordings can then be watched on any box - either Main or mini (except UHD recordings which can only be watched on the main box).

There is no separation of recordings between what was triggered from the main or any mini - there is no Profile system

As linked to previously, you may, also, wish to read some notes I have made for people considering switching from SKY +/HD to SKY Q SKY +/HD to SKY Q

Re: Why upgrade from Sky HD+ to Sky Q?

Yes, but, my one question is, atm, can people instruct the main box to record, from sitting in front of of their mini box, ie they don't have to go and sit in front of the main box to do it? Thank you.

Just one more. If you can't watch in UHD on a mini box, would it record anyway, just HD, or whatever, or will it just not record?

Thank you.

hi @Kate30101

you set the recording on a mini, just like you would on the main box - the interface is just the same, so to answer your question specifically  you do not have to do this via the main box.

If you do set a recording on the main box to record in UHD then, unfortunately that cannot be viewed on the mini box - there is no 'downscaling' capability

Some of us who watch sports like F1 in UHD actually set to record in both UHD & HD so that we can watch on a mini should we wish to do so
