Some buttons on remote will not work on Sky+

Hi,

I have 3 tv's  all working on the magic eyes.  None of the remotes will work pressing record for programs later in the day/week (the red light does flash but nothing happens) They do work for the program that is on while watching the tv.

I have rebooted the box 4 times and my router twice., also have done a rebuild on my box.   Has anyone any ideas what is wrong with my box/remote please.  Sky tells me that they cannot help with Sky+ and keep trying to make me upgrade to Sky Q which as you know does not work with magic eyes. I am a pensioner and cannot afford to upgrade.

My Sky box is about 3 years old but remotes are older (rev9)   On the tv in the lounge  I have to press select numerous times before it responds and flashes red but it does work on select. All remotes work fine on ff, sound and everything else..  I did buy a new remote but that wont work  on record either.

If anyone can help me I wold be so grateful. Many thanks.

Chel

@Cheryl678  The last sky+HD box was made around 2015 so yours will be at least 10 years old even though you may have had it 3 years.

It is possible the box is failing as you've bought a replacement remote and have the same issue.

Even if you obtained a replacement Sky+HD box you wouldn't be able to pair your viewing card to it.

Upgrading to Sky Q shouldn't cost you more, in fact if you're no longer in a discounted minimum term it could be to your advantage.

Sky Q doesn't use a magic eye as it doesn't need to, the mini boxes work as slave boxes to the main Q box.

hi @Cheryl678

Should you consider  a move to SKY Q, you may, also, wish to read some notes I have made for people considering switching from SKY +/HD to SKY Q

SKY +/HD to SKY Q

although I see you are, already, cautious due to  the lack of RF & Magic eye capability.

@Cheryl678 so, to confirm,  if you press record on any remote, your Sky box will record successfully the programme currently playing. But if you press record while you're using the TV Guide, the red light in the remote flashes, but the box doesn't respond and doesn't add the programme to your Planner? Does the red light on the front panel of your Sky box flash when you press record on your remote while using the TV Guide?

Hi Mark,  Thanks for answering, yes you have explained it better than me!! Yes the light on the box and remote both flash red when I press record.

Re: Some buttons on remote will not work on Sky+

HI chuck, thanks for answering, wow, how helpful was that!

To be honest I am an old dear and not very techy! I have a small bungalow and have my tv's in the lounge, kitchen and bedroom. I have the tv on all day, it keeps me company! I like the magic eyes as I can be cleaning round the house and still listen to my program where ever I am in the house. I can go days and not speak to anyone so I love my TV.

I'm not sure about a couple of things, Sky + obviously keeps all the recordings on the planner and I can see them in all rooms. Does this happen with SkyQ too?  can you record something and use the remote in different rooms to view/pause/ff etc them?

Thanks again for your help, take care.

Re: Some buttons on remote will not work on Sky+

Hi, Thanks for answering. I am an old dear and not at all techy! please feel free to talk to me as if I am an idiot!

It would be about 10 years ago I got a new Sky+ box and it went wrong quite quickly, they sent an engineer and he managed to fix it but left me the new box he brought in case he couldn't. It was about 3 years ago it died and the engineer couldn't do anything so I asked him to fit my new one, which he did.

The replacement remote I got came from ebay and was a load of junk to be honest so I returned it. It's strange but the three remotes all have different problems with different buttons, although the record is not working with any.

So would I need a new SkyQ box and 2 mini boxes for the other 2 rooms?

Thanks again chuck. Take care.

hi @Cheryl678

SKY's official answer would be a main box with minis for the other rooms but this needs a (single) Multiscreen subscription in addition to possible one off 'admin' fees for any mini after the 1st

With SKy Minis, they work differently to SKY HD (using the aerial cable).

With SKY minis you can watch any channel, like you can on the main box but, if you want you can watch a completely different chanel.

You can watch any recording on the mini (unless you have a UHD recording which I am guessing you are not initially considering) BUT with minis it is different in that you need to  stop the recording in one room and then select the recording to watch in the other and  it should pick up where you stopped.

If you don't stop the recording fisrt it may just play from where you last stopped which could be quite different to where you were up to if you leave it playing.

The unofficial alternative is to get an HDMI to RF converter which then uses the TV aerial cables (which may need the TVs to be retuned) &  would allow you to watch quite similar to now but doing it this way relies on either using the (very good range)  bluetooth Main Remote   in the other rooms or setting up an alternative to the magic eye system to controk the box (I am not sure what options are currently available)

@Cheryl678 I think your first instinct of carrying out a Planner Rebuild was right.

I'd suggest repeating a Planner Rebuild, following Sky's instructions in the help guide here: https://www.sky.com/help/sky-tv/sky-tv-plus/sky-plus-watching-sky-tv/sky-plus-recordings/articles/re...

If that doesn't fix it, the next step would be a Full System Reset, explained in the same guide - but beware this will delete all your recordings.

Re: Some buttons on remote will not work on Sky+

Thanks nigea99,

You have certainly given me food for thought. At the moment I have 2 Samsung smart tv's (and a little bush tv in the kiitchen) and do record HD programs. I assume that is a step down from UHD, which you are right I am not considering.

You have been so helpful explaining things to me that I can understand!!

Cheers,

Re: Some buttons on remote will not work on Sky+

Thanks again Mark39,

Sorry, I didn't say before that it has been happening intermittantly for a few months but just rebooting the box fixed it for a month or so. I did ring Sky and I asked if it was faulty could it be repaired and they said no becuase no engineers know how to fix the + boxes anymore!  Do you know if this is true or are they trying to make me go on to Q?

I've a few things being recorded tonight, (I set these last week) so I will try what you say later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks again, I really do appreciate your help.
