Sky+HD contract ending soon and no renewal options

My Sky+HD contract is ending soon and there are no renewal options, only Sky Q upgrades.
Will I still be able to use my box to record from the EPG and view existing recordings?

Is there an out of contract rate?
If not, and my Sky contract comes to an end, could I still use the box to watch the free to air channels which are pretty much all my viewing anyway?

Thanks

I guess so, but it might be worth it anyway as I expect I could buy a Freeview box for less than a years subscription.

You would still be able to view the free to air channels, and I think you'd still have the EPG, but you wouldn't be able to make new recordings, or view existing recordings.

@Warrington+Craig

Sky are obviously trying to get Sky+ customers to upgrade as Sky+ set ups are no longer supported but there are still renewals to be had. If you’re no longer in a discounted minimum term, or its ending soon the best new discounts are normally acquired by calling Sky and negotiating or potentially amending your package which will now require a 24 month minimum term contract. Sky are not obliged to offer you another discount, and recent posts on here indicate that significant discounts are now harder to come by. If you’re offered something acceptable be prepared to agree to it there and then because if you decide to think about it the offer may no longer be available when you call back.

Re: Sky+HD contract ending soon and no renewal options

Thanks Daniel. I did speak to someone off shore this morning who said that there was no renewal option. How do I get through to someone more able to help? I've been with Sky for 25+ years and would be happy to pay £20pm or so just to continue with the EPG, my exisiting recordings, and free-to-air channels - which I would have thought should be possible until my box eventually gives up the ghost.

@Warrington+Craig you could try speaking to cancellations/retentions.

It's the Sky Plus subscription that would enable you to record from the free to air channels, but that appears no longer to be available, probably for the reasons already given. ou can receive the free to air channels with no subscription, but recording requires the minimum Sky Plus subscription.

Re: Sky+HD contract ending soon and no renewal options

Thanks Mark,

Do you know what happens when my 24 month contract ends? Is that it, no more Sky contract, or does it change to a rolling 1 month, and if so at what rate?

Does anyone know, if the Sky contract ends, whether I could continue to:

use the EPG ,

watch existing recordings,

make new recordings of free to air channnels?

I don't know the standard list prices off the top of my head, and they're not easy to find online! If you check your future bills, you should see what you'll be paying based on your current subscription.

Yes

Yes.

It's not your 'contract' that actually expires (though that's what all the companies in this sector call it). It's your minimum discounted term that expires, which just means your subscription continues as is, subject to 31 days notice as @Annie+UK posted, but you pay the standard list price.

Re: Sky+HD contract ending soon and no renewal options

Thanks Mark and Annie, that is now clear.

Perhaps this is the nudge to consider cancelling anyway, rather than pay £480pa (Signature package) mostly to watch free to air.

If I did so, would I then lose the ability to use my Sky+HB box to watch free to air channels. use the EPG ,  and so make and view recordings?

I guess so, but it might be worth it anyway as I expect I could buy a Freeview box for less than a years subscription.

@Warrington+Craig If it helps, I recently renewed my 24 month contract on my Sky+HD Box by speaking to customer retentions.

Re: Sky+HD contract ending soon and no renewal options

Thank you oj01 - that is helpful. Did they give you a reasonable discount on the standard rolling monthly price?

Yes, I'm paying the same as my previous contract.

Re: Sky+HD contract ending soon and no renewal options

That's exactly the outcome I was hoping to get to. It's a shame to have to jump though hoops to find out it is even possible, and then more no doubt to achieve it! Thanks for your help 🙂
