My friend has passed on to me a used Sky+HD box and its viewing card, to replace my even older Sky non-HD box. I had heard that this could only be registered to a new user if the original viewing card was with it. I cannot find any way through the online support to achieve this and the contact telephone numbers dont include this scenario as one to solve. Is it scrap the lot time ?

Viewing Cards aren't transferable (it's a contractual restriction) and they're specific to a subscription. There's no way for you to add this Card to your subscription, I'm afraid.
To continue with Sky if your current Sky box has had it, you would need to upgrade either to Sky Q or Sky Stream.

@Ric15 You can no longer add new/replacement boxes to an account
the viewing card is also non transferable
