I suspect they would argue continuing to pay for SD satellite data transit in addition to that for the HD signal would be a poor use of Licence Fee income because it's consumed by an ever-decreasing and now very small percentage of viewers while remaining a fixed (or increasing) cost: it's the same data volume passing over the uplink and orbiting platform to transmit to one Sky+ box as it is for a million.
