I would suspect a failing hard drive.

Thanks. Having had a discussion with a Sky engineer, as our box is now obsolete, we're getting a new box in the New Year - which doesn't help the immediate situation, but that can you do?

I presume by that you mean you're upgrading to Sky Q as Sky don't support or supply Sky+ / Sky+HD any longer and you can no longer pair your viewing card to a privately purchased box.
Based on that assumption I will cc in one of the other Superusers who has compiled a help guide for those thinking of transitioning from Plus to Q which may provide some insight into something you hadn't considered.
