No sound from AV receiver and separate speakers with Sky HD box

Hopefully someone can help. Have a new LG 4K tv. Had followed someone's advice I read somewhere and connected the Sky box via HDMI to the TV HDMI Port. Connected the Optical Port on the TV to the Optical Port on the AV Amp. No sound when the AV Amp is switched on. Set TV to Optical out and signal to Bitstream, as someone had said this was the way to set up an AV Amp with the TV and Sky HD box. Tried all the Amp inputs and no sound from the TV, only the TV speakers produce sound. Thought HDMI from the Sky box sent the picture to the TV and the Optical cable took the sound back to the Amp. Any ideas where I am going wrong? Thanks

HI @wanabe

Please may I ask what AV receiver you have (make & model)

Do you know if it supports ARC (or eARC) ?

If the AV supports ARC then using an HDMI from the (e)ARC  Port on the TV to the TV/ARC port on the Amp is probably better

Have you used the optical input on your AV before ?

Is it connected to the same input as anything else - often optical inputs double up with HDMI and/or analogue inputs and might need assigning in the AV

Even though you have configured the TV to output bitstream there is usually an option in the TV menus to switch audio from the Speakers to the AV System

You could coonnect the SKY + box optical direct to the AV but that would mean you can only use the AV for SKY & not for the TVs inbuilt apps so from the TV is better

Re: No sound from AV receiver and separate speakers with Sky HD box

It is a Yamaha RV473 so old and not 4K. Not used Optical before but someone suggested it on a forum. Amp gas ARC but not eARC. HDMI 3 eARC on the TV  is where I connected the Sky box to. Then TV optical back to amp thinking this would root sound tonAmp. Set TV to Optical out for sound output

Re: No sound from AV receiver and separate speakers with Sky HD box

Previously had the Sky box Optical connected to the Amp Optical in. May have to try this again but want TV apps, such as YouTube to use the Amp, not just Sky

hi @wanabe

May I suggest you plug the SKY Q box into a different HDMI Port on the TV - it should not be connected to the eARC Port (it doesn't matter that the amp is only ARC)  as(e)ARC ports are intended fo connecting to AV equipment (They can be used as just inputs but not really recommended when users have - or might get - AV equipment with ARC capability)

Then use another  HDMI Cable to connect the eARC port on your TV  to the AV  & try selecting Audio 4  (if I have read the manual correctly) on the amp  (unless you have changed the default) - You may have to also make sure nothing else is connected to AV 4  as I am not too sure on precedence (i.e. at this point try without optical)

You might also need to set HDMI control to on, on both your TV (HDMI3 you mention) & the amp - if not already on

(BTW I have Yamaha RX-A3060 & a RX-V585)

Re: No sound from AV receiver and separate speakers with Sky HD box

in case anyone else has the same problem I have now taken the HDMI that was plugged into the TV eARC and plugged it into the Am pARC HDMI port. Then put an HDMI from the Sky box into the Amp HDMI port 1. Now have sound and tv controls amp turning in and off, as I have enabled CEC and eARC on the TV.

hi @wanabe

Glad you have sound as you wish.

There is a limitation with this answer, in that your AMP is not new enough to pass through 4K/HDR so if you have a suitable SKY Q box (& UHD subscription) you  would need to go from the SKY Box direct to your TV and rely on the ARC audio
