My sky+HD box will not record pre-set programmes. Every time it shows "failed"

Assuming you have two cables from your satellite dish, one of them is not providing a signal. That can be caused by a faulty connector at either the Sky box or dish end. or a faulty cable, or a faulty port at the LNB (the bit on the dish where the cables connect).
You could try unplugging and reconnecting the dish connectors at the box end, with the box switched off at the plug. Failing that you'll probably need a local satellite engineer to come out and take a look (Sky no longer provide engineer support for Sky+). Until then, if set your box to Single Feed Mode, you'll be able to record one programme or watch one live channel at a time. I think the SFM setting is in the Installer Menu. Let us know if you don't know how to get to it.
You might also consider upgrading to Sky Q. Any dish or cable problems will be fixed at no additional cost to you as part of the Sky Q installation.

Thank you for your reply. I have gone through the software update process but that hasn't worked

@DavidH1956 if a Planner Rebuild doesn't resolve it, tell us the failure reason. If you highlight a failed recording in your Planner and press i on your remote, the failure reason will be shown on screen.

Software update is not a Planner Rebuild the two are totally different

I have fine the Planner Rebuild and tried a recording. It still failed unfortunately

But if I record in real time, it records successfully

Thank you for your help. I have reconnected the two satellite cables in the back of the box and this seems to have resolved the problem.
