My Sky+ box is no longer being supported with software updates.

I I have been informed that Sky have stopped supporting my Sky+ box with software updates. I cannot afford to upgrade to Sky Q or any other option as I am on my .imit already. But my contacts does not expire untill June 2025. Because the service I receive under the contract I currently have is no longer being offered, surely I should be able to terminate my contract early without penalty? Can anyone advice me if this is correct, please? Thank you.

@Whitehalllane

There haven't been software updates to Sky+ boxes for years. Have you checked that if you upgrade to Sky Q your monthly charge doesn't actually decrease slightly?

INFORMATION FOR SKY+ USERS: From 29th October 2024 you will no longer be able to pair your viewing card to a Sky+/Sky+HD box that the card is not already paired to, so if your Sky box fails you can’t replace it and you'll need to move to either Sky Q, Sky Glass or Sky Stream to access Sky content

hi @Whitehalllane

The lack of Software updates does not mean that your box will stop working - in fact they have not had any updates for a long time

SKY do seem to be using this 'lack of software updates' to try to get people to switch to Q or Glass/Stream but you do not need to at this point

BTW Switching to Q or Stream may not work out any dearer  & may even be cheaper but there are other factors to consider so you may, also, wish to read some notes I have made for people considering switching from SKY +/HD to SKY Q

SKY +/HD to SKY Q

@Whitehalllane there's no urgent need to upgrade. If youi have a Sky+HD box it will continue to function without any further updates.

Re: My Sky+ box is no longer being supported with software updates.

Thanks for confirming this is just a Sky marketing ploy to get us to upgrade to Q.

I'll be keeping my Sky+HD box until it fails as I have loads of recordings and love its simplicity to use (& the App).

In the context of this thread it's worth noting that as of October 29th 2024 it is no longer possible to take a viewing card from a malfunctioning subscription Sky+ HD box and pair it with a replacement box acquired second hand.
