The cause is most likely a fault with your dish or cables. Unfortunately Sky no longer provide engineer support for Sky+ equipment (the forum you've posted in) unless you have Sky Protect, so you'll need to contact a local satellite engineer to take a look.
Alternatively now might be a good time to consider upgrading to Sky Q. Any dish or cabling issues will be addressed as part of the Sky Q installation at no additional cost to you.

@P+Beach Calls to Sky will initially be automated which may try to send you here to the forum, offer you online help or offer to send you a text. Stay on the line as long as possible and saying nothing when asked the reason for the call sometimes helps being put in the queue for an agent.
I will cc in one of the other Superusers who has compiled a helpful guide for those thinking of transitioning from Plus to Q which may provide some insight into something you hadn't considered.

@P+Beach Virgin certainly wouldn't suffer atmospheric intrusion. If you're looking in that direction, you might want to consider Sky Stream, which is delivered via your broadband service and therefore also not at the behest of satellite reception..
