With regard to your remote, it's probably simplest to replace it. They're available at reasonable price from hardware stores and even supermarkets.
For the box itself, it sounds as though you're only receiving a signal on one of the dish inputs. Check your signal strengths (Services > Settings >Signal). The white part of all four bars should be at least half way across.
