Re: Sky stream is absolutely awful. I’m done

Hi Dismay . I had the same problems even getting a new puck from sky . I posted on a thread about my experience and how I was binning it to . I don't know if I've fixed it but it's been great since I connected the puck to a WiFi extender that only has 2.4 ghz . I switched the 5ghz off in the router settings and now got everything connected with 2.4ghz including the puck and it's been great . Definitely worth a try .

Sky Stream does support 5GHz, but it isn't necessarily always an upgrade over 2.4GHz. It's very much dependant on your environment; for example, it has a much shorter range and going through walls and other obstacles will have more of an effect than the 2.4GHz frequencies.

That's a big deal for Sky Stream which requires a constant good speed and stable connection.

When it comes to 5GHz vs 2.4GHz, the general rule of thumb is to consider 5GHz better until it proves itself it isn't, and then 2.4GHz is the way to go. This isn't a Sky phenomenon, it's present across all kinds of tech - it's just that Sky Stream really requires that stability so you may notice it more than on other devices.

Not for me .. anytime I am connected  to 5 ghz the sky puck is utter crap . Connected to 2.4ghz and it's been great . I've been testing  different ways to connect this piece of **bleep** since god knows when and now after a year and a new puck it's been great connected through 2.4 🤷‍♂️. Even the new puck was playing up when I received it and was on the verge of cancelling the whole lot . But now it's perfect .

@Bigal66 to be clear, I'm backing up what you say - that sometimes 2.4GHz is better 🙂

Re: Sky stream is absolutely awful. I’m done

👍 by the way it was just a fluke I connected to the extender . Was searching for the WiFi on the sky puck and thought may as well try and connect to this . It was only when I was checking the settings I noticed the extender was on 2.4ghz . It's weird as it does the same with the Ethernet cable . Cant believe it's perfect now 😂.

Glad you found a combination that works well!

Re: Sky stream is absolutely awful. I’m done

I have not had many issues at all with Stream but do notice it needs a good broad band connection - I remember moving my Virgin hub quite someway from the stream box and it started to struggle, maybe it was just coincidence - but with a 1gig wifi - it works without lag or little lag.

Its a good set up with tons of content, and when you get used to the UI or at least for me - I dont miss Q - other than the hard box recordings - but then play lists take care of that for the most part. Only downside is when my Virgin goes down (rare but does happen sometimes) you loose all ability to watch anything.  I am thinking of ditching stream but not because I think its a bad product but I find myself using firestick more and more - but not sure yet.

Re: Sky stream is absolutely awful. I’m done

I've just ordered stream to switch from Q (which I've had terrible connection issues with since day 1 many years ago, had 2 minis hard wired which helped but the 3rd never worked) and reading this with interest.

For anyone having connection issues get a mesh network. A lot of broadband providers will help with that now.

For years I struggled with WiFi in parts of my house, we have 3 storeys and a side extension so 2 rooms are on the wrong side of what used to be an external wall. Q couldn't get a signal through, wifi was also awful and I tried all kinds of crap like extenders and powerline. Some of them were ok but a pain to use.

A decent mesh system though and now I get 300+ in both the loft and extension on a 500mbps connection. It's been amazing and I presume will be plenty for stream. I went overboard and it was expensive, but it's only wifi 6 and a few years old now, there's decent wifi 6 mesh's quite cheap now. It brings 5G nearer too as you are nearer to each mesh terminal.

Obviously all this is only as good as what you can put into it, if you only have 75mbps in and there's 3 stream pucks, kids hammering YouTube etc it's going to struggle still, but will make the most of it.

Just my twopenneth, hope it helps someone.

I have virgin's gigabit internet. Rapid everywhere on every device but still get connection issues with stream. Most of the time the issues aren't just a failed connection though, its more bugs that happen when you watch something and it randomly just stops like its stuck loading. Pixelation on some programs can be a pain in the bum to

Uh-oh, worried now. My son has glass in his flat though and he's had no issues, and there are others on here that are ok. Hoping I get lucky and / or this super new software update does the trick.

Re: Sky stream is absolutely awful. I’m done

Well, I've not even had chance to try out the product yet, ordered yesterday delivered today, still sat in box, but they've just sent me an email saying that they are putting the price up £9.50. On the deal I agreed yesterday, when they specifically told me there would be no increase this year.

You should be fine on Sky Stream with that network setup.

On setting up your pucks, make sure you do the following, that we recommend and find helps customers for a more reliable ongoing experience;

Make sure you have a good 6-8 inches free on all sides of the puck.
Do not stack the puck on top of any other device.
Best not to sit it on a glass shelf. Wood is generally the best.
Make sure the puck is in the open, not tucked away in a cabinet or sat directly behind the TV.
Make sure you have no other devices that can cause interference closeby, like cordless phones, radiators, baby monitors, smart meter in home displays, microwaves and the like.
You should be using the Sky supplied hdmi cable or a high speed equivalent one.

Plus, change both your pucks to the following recommended settings, set in Settings>
Turn wifi OFF under Network if connected via ethernet.
Set Network standby mode to ON and Overnight power saving to OFF.

Its worth also, at least once a week giving the Pucks a settings restart, more to clear any cache and a server connection type refresh;

Go to Settings>Systems Management>Resets & Updates
Select Restart device
Your Sky Stream puck will perform a reboot. It will take a few minutes to complete

Re: Sky stream is absolutely awful. I’m done

Thanks. I've got to install 2 behind TVs, hope that doesn't cause interference. So far the other 2 are working great. Got 4k in the room Q couldn't even get a signal to without being hardwired. Going to hold off installing the others as it's awkward and sky have had to open a case about my price. I was told no price increase this year when getting new deal Friday, 24 hours later they put my price up. It's going back if they don't discount it back, £9.50 extra is 10% increase and I was told no increase.

So far so good, 2 working great, way better than Q, will see how it goes.

Re: Sky stream is absolutely awful. I’m done

I've had my puck of s***e for 6 months and am counting down the months (18) until I can launch it back to sky.

In all honesty I now spend more time watching YouTube, so when it goes I won't be bothered about missing anything on sky.

Between the picture pixalating or freezing and sound out of sync, having to pay for the privilege of not seeing adverts on recorded programs!

Roll on August 26!
