Sky Stream to AVR no 5.1 sound

I am new to Sky Stream (from BT TV).

I have my puck connected to my Sony AVR and the AVR linked to my TV via HDMI/eARC.

Everything works fine, except I only get stereo sound, not 5.1 surround sound.

Do I have to pay extra for that?

Re: Sky Stream to AVR no 5.1 sound

I had the sky puck plugged into TV then soundbar plugged into earc hdmi port and had a lot of problems with sound stuttering and going off. Changed every setting could find and replaced all the cables. What fixed it was turned earc to arc on the TV settings. Puck now set to auto, TV set to auto and I now do not get any sound drop outs and switches to Atmos and Dolby digital as it should. Never know might help here too.

No. You only need to pay extra for Atmos from certain Sky channels and on demand content.

You should get 5.1 audio from content which is streamed in 5.1. Try playing something on Netflix which is labelled as having 5.1.

Make sure your puck's audio settings are set to Auto or Passthrough or Dolby Digital.

Re: Sky Stream to AVR no 5.1 sound

@NilocW Sky Stream will try and output Dolby Digital Plus by default; if it senses the device(s) at the other end of the HDMI cable cannot decode Dolby Digital Plus, it should then try Dolby Digital. If that doesn't work it should try outputting PCM stereo sound.

What model is your Sony AVR and is it connected directly your Stream puck (ie Stream puck > AVR > TV) or is your Stream puck connected to your TV and then using eARC to connect the TV to your Sony AVR (ie Stream puck > TV > AVR)?

Connect your puck to the hdmi port on your tv and the AVR via eARC to your tv @NilocW

I've done that. It's the same, only stereo and no 5.1 surround sound 😕

Re: Sky Stream to AVR no 5.1 sound

I have tried both connection routes, but it's the same. Currently, as I said in my original post, the puck is HDMI to the AVR (Sony  STR-DN860) and the AVR is connected to the TV ARC/eARC with HDMI.

Puck is set to Auto, but I have tried Pass through also as suggested by someone.

Have you checked your tv sound settings? Make sure it's not set to PCM @NilocW

Re: Sky Stream to AVR no 5.1 sound

Curious one. The Sony AVR you;re using definitely supports Dolby Digital Plus so should be happy with the Sky Stream puck being set to Auto (Dolby Digital Plus by default) or Passthrough (passing through the raw Dolby Digital Plus bitstream over HDMI).

If your receiver has internet connnectivity, is the firmware/software up to date? Page 189 of the manual at https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/W001/W0014508M.pdf Other than a HDMI handshaking issue betweeen your Sky Stream puck and your AVR, I'm struggling to think what the issue might be.

Re: Sky Stream to AVR no 5.1 sound

You don't say what type of TV you have, but try connecting directly to the TV to test. My LG has an info button which when pressed gives some detail on the current signal including the sound type, e.g PCM or Dolby Digital. Assuming your TV has something similar, maybe in the menus, see what is displayed. If you can't see that, if you give details on your TV someone here may know how to get that info.

It's an LG TV (OLED55A16LA), but the remote does not have an 'info' button.

The puck is set to 'passthrough' and the TV is set to 'passthrough' with eARC.

Re: Sky Stream to AVR no 5.1 sound

Press the three dots button, and then scroll down to info - it may well be the second one, you may have the first info being info on the Sky box, if so you want the second which is info on the TV. See what that shows on screen [with the box plugged into the TV].
