Re: Sky Stream hard drive for Sky Q phase out?

Why can SKY PLC not go with 100TB Data Center SSDs for their SKY Q STBs as they are more reliable as they are not Mechanical Spinning Rust Drives and therefore there will be no need for a 12V supply line unless they are going to generate 15V and 18V to facalitate H/V Switching what about it SKY PLC.

Sky Q is being phased out with Sky Stream or Glass becoming the default option for new subscribers so the likelihood of them re engineering the hardware is pretty remote.

ExaDrive specializes in extra high capacity 3.5-inch solid state drives for the data center. The biggest model it currently has is the EDDCT100 which retails for a staggering $40,000 or $400 per TB, about 13x the price of the cheapest SSD on a per TB basis

@Davidkerr18071965  in the chance you are being serious Sky's owners Comcast are switching to a streaming service in all markets worldwide. Q as a system will no longer be developed and at some point will be withdrawn from sale as it is highly unlikely that wnen the current satellite fleet serving the UK market lives comes to an end in the next 8 or so years that they will be replaced.

The biggest driver is cost as Sky UK alone can save hundreds of millions anually by stopping satellite broadcasting - you dont need thousands of home engineers to install simple pucks etc . Add in the cost of cloud systems are such you can offer access to a vast amount of material to any puck which operates as a thin client with the servers running the apps and providing the content simplyfying the in home set up. SSDs are used but they are in remote data centres not in the box in your lounge.

There is a myth that the customer has control of recordings on a Q box, they dont as Sky can and on occasion does delete any recording from the hard disc even if marked as keep.. Rights owners require that ability.

@Chrisee good point about rights ownership. Apparently ITV are blocking Fast Forwarding through adverts onBT/EE TV if you record anything from ITV via their IP delivery so there is nothing stopping them from triggering a remote delete from any internet connected box.

@Nigelb1972 good point Q boxes apparently have a similar ability stop you fast forwarding through ads on recordings if Sky implement it. In practice there is very little difference whether it's a local recording or a cloud recording the customer doesn't own either despite what many Q customers like to believe.

Incidentally, Sky UK hasn't been a PLC since Sky Group was acquired by the Comcast Corporation in late 2018.
