Sky Puck to TV TO Onkyo

SkyQ worked great passing both sound and picture through the AV. When doing this with the Puck I keep getting picture spooling. My broadband here isnt great 25mb, but when I connect puck direct to TV using TV speaker the picture doesnt spool at all. I have been doing this for a mionth now with no issues other than rubbish TV speaker sound. Today I thought I would give it another go using my TV optical out but now I just get sky picture with no sound from amp. I am obviously being stupid somewhere so ask what is it I have done wrong.

HDMI from puck to TV

HDMI out from amp to TV so I can use the onscreen amp menu

optical tv out to optical amp in.  No sound all help appreciated.

Re: Sky Puck to TV TO Onkyo

The Denon X4300H should work fine going from Sky Stream puck to any of the HDMI inputs on the AVR receiver. The Denon should process the sound from the puck and pass the video out of the TV/Monitor HDMI output to your TV. If you set your Sky Puck sound output (Settings > Sound > Digital audio output HDMI) to either Dolby Digital Plus or Passthrough, you'll get the best sound format available for whatever show your're watching, be that Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital+ 7.1/5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, or Dolby Surround stereo - much better than the vanilla stereo your were getting via an optical cable from your TV.

The Denon AVR can then act as the input switcher for your various source devices (Sky Puck, games consoles, DVD/BluRay players etc). You should also get the Denon's own user interface overlay on the TV as well, so changing volume, using setup & info button to check the soundtrack being input/which speakers are active for the sound.

@Jagster115

I presume your TV and/or amp doesn't support ARC or eARC?

Are you selecting the optical input on the amp when the Stream puck is playing something? Have you tried the different audio settings on the puck? Normal/Dolby Digital/Dolby Digital+?

Your puck should  work in the same way as your previous Q setup worked, so puck > HDMI > Onkyo AVR > HDI to TV, with your Onkyo AVR handling the sound and overlaying its on screen menus for your TV to display. (This is exactly how my puck > Denon AVR > Sony TV works)

Could you let us know what model your Onkyo AVR is? If your TV is 4K, does your Onkyo AVR support passing through 4K? if you let us know the model number, we can check things like 4K pass through, Dolby Digital+ compatibility and whether it supports ARC/eArc, if you want your TV to output sound to the AVR in a puck > TV > AVR configuration.

Your 25Mbit/s broadband is right on the threshold for meeting the minimum bandwidth for Sky Stream, so it might also be worth checking that no other devices are using the same bandwidth whilst your watching TV (other streaming devices, games consoles & computers downloading updates etc). There is a test utility in the Netflix app that will tell you what broadband speed is being seen by the puck itself, rather than what your router sees.

Re: Sky Puck to TV TO Onkyo

I thought I had cracked it by hdmi direct to TV and using TV optical out to Onkyo. This only gives stereo though now so thats no good.

I also have a Denon AVR-4300H which I shall now try to use instead. TBH the Onkyo is a bit old now and gets really hot as well.

Looking at your reply you say HDI to TV. Is that a typo or is there an HDI connection on your Denon?

Yes my LG TV is 4K. and as for the spooling I havent had a problem at all when the amp hasnt been connected for the last few months. Its only now I thought I would have another go at connecting the surround sound.CoffeeDrinker
