Sky Puck YouTube app played in 4K. Now it doesn't. Factory reset the puck, then it did, but..

...then I turned it off and came back and hour later and now it doesn't.

Internet speed is fine.

TV is set to the correct resolution.

Sky Puck is set to 2160p.

I'm miffed. Sky Puck broken perhaps? Anyone has this issue?

Hi, it depends on what they have filmed the video quality in as only 4K are upscaled

I have the same issue it has been there from the beginning. The underlying problem is that the YouTube app isn't consistently detecting the proper viewport size of your TV and tops out at 1080p. Happens daily for me. If you exit the YouTube app (keep hitting back until it prompts you to exit) then relaunch the app it should resolve. Not all the time, but most of the time.

If it has the 4K logo underneath the title it'll be able to do 4K, but for some reason the option to change it to 4K keeps disappearing.

Yep same issue for me. If you start a video that should be 4k, select the settings button then the stats for nerds toggle it will put an overlay on the screen. One of the properties is Viewport. When the bug occurs that resolution will say 1920 x 1080. This is why it hides the 4k resolution option in the video menu so you can't even manually switch to it.

When the bug is not occuring the Viewport value will read 1920 x 1080 x 2. This is because the YouTube app itself on Sky runs in 1080p. On a native client like on the Apple TV box the viewport reads as 3840 x 2160.

Hard to know who to point the finger at in terms of fault. More likely it's YouTube as the other apps on the puck output at 4k no problem

It'll be YouTube messing around. When watching something, just press Up and scooch over to the little cog on the right and check the resolution in there as YouTube likes to get stuck on a low resolution.

It does this on my Roku, Samsung TV, and Puck and it completely ignores what I've set the default resolution to.

It seems to be sticking at 1080p whenever I've watched something on YouTube on my phone...

Moral to this story, is that the issue is with the YouTube app and it's general awkwardness.

I've just been testing 4K content on YouTube and works as expected for me. No issues that I can see.

@Dazzasky I was watching something earlier and it was fine for me as well. It only does it occasionally but it's a pia when it does

Not seeing any issues with any 4k output on YouTube app on my Sky stream. It's def 4k output.

But stats for Nerds within the YouTube app is showing the 'Viewport value  1920 x 1080 x 2', as mentioned above.

It's not going to happen every time. To be very clear I can watch 4k content on YouTube a lot of the time. However, when the bug lands, 1080p is the maximum available and it requires either a few restarts of the YT app or a reboot of the puck.
