HDR not HLG for Sky Sports

Coming from Q. I always had HLG. On stream it's HDR. Is this not a step back in technology? I thought HLG was better for live sports.

@atann

Stream pucks are specified as supporting HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG.

Did you opt for the Sky UHD/HDR add-on?

I though I had Now? As I've got the little rectangular in the bottom right corner when watching sports?

Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) is a HDR format. The others are HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Sky chose to use HLG because it was designed by BBC Worldwide and NHK of Japan for use in live TV broadcasts. It's extremely data efficient and gives results comparable to, if not better than HDR10.

Its also licence free so royalties aren't required unlike Dolby Vision.

@atann live UHD sport on Stream uses HLG and is no different from Sky Q in that respect. All of Sky's own content in HDR uses HLG whether live or not. Other broadcasters/apps use different codecs which the pucks also support.

The main gain to broadcasters with HLG is that the same stream can potentially support both SDR and HDR capable TVs saving bandwidth.
