Dolby vision picture freezes through hdmi switch

I have contact sky, my tv manufacturer and the hdmi switch manufacturer with no luck.

When viewing Dolby Vision on Disney Plus or Netflix, the picture stutters and eventually freezes and the sound plays on.

I have a Sky Stream puck linked up to FienTech VSW04202 and then into my Sony XR-50X90J. I am using high speed compliant hdmi cables and the tv is set up correctly.

Dolby Vision works perfectly when connected to the tv directly, which would suggest the switch is the issue. The manufacturer is puzzled as the switch just routes the signal in real time.

I use the switch as it extracts the audio so I can connect my ac reciever using hdmi.

Any ideas? Is it just that the puck is not set up to be linked up this way?

Thanks in advance

Looking at the manufacturer website, there appears to be a firmware update zip file for HDR10+/Dolby Vision compliance on your switch.

Do you have this installed?

Look on the Downloads section of this page:

Re: Dolby vision picture freezes through hdmi switch

Yeah i asked them about this when I found the exact thing and they told me the following...

"The firmware update you mentioned was only used for older versions and gives support for TVs which support both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.  On such TVs it was not possible to select Dolby vision on the player. This can't be the issue here."

Ah, OK. Dolby Vision requires more bandwidth so it may be that it's struggling to pass through the signal quickly enough. The switch claims to be compliant up to 60Hz with Dolby Vision. Do you have judder reduction for apps turned on on the puck? This outputs at 60Hz instead of the native 50Hz of all the live channel streams. It might be pushing the switch to its limits if Netflix & Disney+ are using high bit-rates on their Dolby Vision content.

It's up to you. Stream pucks can't output native frame rates from app content, so movies (which tend to be shot and output at 24 frames per second) can look juddery if the puck is set to 50Hz (50 frames per second). Turning judder reduction on changes the puck's output to 60Hz and can make 24fps content look a bit smoother.

Some people are more sensitive than others to judder. I personally don't use a puck for apps because of this as I am very sensitive to it and use an Apple TV box which outputs native frame rates.

Try turning it on and give your puck a reboot then see if it makes any difference.

Re: Dolby vision picture freezes through hdmi switch

Thanks for all your advice.  Unfortunately that's made no difference.

Would a different HDMI switch with audio extractor make a difference?

Probably, yes. It certainly seems like it's the switch that's the problem if you have no trouble with Dolby Vision when connecting the puck directly to the TV.

Re: Dolby vision picture freezes through hdmi switch

@Maverick1975 Looking at the problem from another angle, is it possible to put Stream directly to your TV and use your switch for another device instead?

edit: I see that it's for your AV audio, sorry missed that. Is it possible to use an optical cable between your TV and AV receiver? That would be cleanest I think if possible and avoids messing with the HDMI signal.

Re: Dolby vision picture freezes through hdmi switch

The issue there is i wouldn't get the audio into the av receiver from the puck. That was the only reason I am got the switch....the audio extractor part

Re: Dolby vision picture freezes through hdmi switch

Any idea what specs I need to look for that would differ from the one I have?

@Maverick1975 @I updated my post probably as you were replying and I also queried about optical, any chance there?

Re: Dolby vision picture freezes through hdmi switch

It's an older onkyo. It has hdmi switching but not for 4k and the new hdmi 2.0 or 2.1

Re: Dolby vision picture freezes through hdmi switch

Yeah, I get you. I would try the optical route where you run an optical cable between your Onkyo and Sony if you can, cut out room for switches and stuff to cause delays (even if they shouldn't)
