With no option to rent ( there was yesterday ) on our TV , I've logged in on my phone and rented a film and payed , now it won't appear on our tv to watch ?????

That is correct as you can only watch rented films online as they is how you purchased it. Only Buy and Keep films can be sent to your Sky box.
Are you saying there is no rent option against any film on your Sky box ?

If by any chance you have a recent LG TV you can use the built in Skystore app on there to view your "bought online" rental on your TV
Many (non premiere) rentals can be sent to your TV via Chromecast if you have one
Similarly, if you have a PC or laptop with an HDMI output, many rental can be viewed on a TV via HDMI
Roku usually works also.

Any webOS LG TV will have the Sky Store app!
