I'm a sky Vip gold and using the code given enabled me to watch a film for free, but don't know how to get this on my TV.

The normal way to get your free VIP movie is to choose one from this list as a buy and keep - then select - "send to box"

Before you select it - make sure the cost is showing as £0.

Is that what you have tried ?
