Hi - I'm building a garden room 20m from house and would like to use sky Q mini box and get WiFi in the room. I'm going to run cat 6 Ethernet from router in house to room. What do I need to get WiFi for phone/laptop etc and will mini box work wirelessly? Do I need a specific WAP? All help much appreciated

Hi @HOOPERT
For that to function you need to be on Sky Broadband.
If on 3rd party broadband then you either need to run the Ethernet to the main Q box or put all Q boxes on Ethernet to your router.

If you connect the Ethernet to the Mini you can use its Hotspot for other device WiFi.

Thank you, would that work by moving an existing mini box out there or should I order a new one (£50). Would the WiFi from a mini box plugged into Ethernet on sky fibre broadband give a good enough signal for laptop (work) and mobile phone? Or would I need to purchase a WAP and have 2 Ethernet cables running from router in house to garden room

If the Mini WiFi hotspot is not suitable @HOOPERT you don't need another Ethernet cable.
You just need a simple unmanaged Ethernet switch. These have 5 ports and so you can connect the mini and other devices as well as amWiFi access point.
Something like the following

Thank you very much. Is there a recommended WAP to use with Sky broadband via a router port?

I suppose a Sky Q WiFi booster would be the best option as this would give the same SSID as your Sky Network.
However you would need to obtain this from Sky

Thank you ..is that done via a phone call to them?

Hi, I believe the booster is no longer available and I now require a sky max pod, would that work the same way as you described?

Thank you for your swift reply, I have a new Sky Max router which is working and the pod is due to arrive in the next few days. My plan is to run ethernet from the router to the office (20 metres) and use a 5 port switcher. If i put a Q mini box into that router switch will it work and if i put the pod into that router switch will it generate wifi in that room?

Yes on both counts @HOOPERT

Thank you, if the Sky Q setup in the house uses Wifi via sky max router, will that cause a problem by having 1 mini box using ethernet cable, presumambly they cant talk to one another but will it still work to view content? sorry for all the questions.

Hi @HOOPERT
The Max router is quite new and apparently works a bit different to previous Sky routers. Not sure how this will work with the main Box on WiF and not Ethernet.
