Why is the sound of Monster Hunter So Bad?

Hello People!

I put Monster Hunter on to sample this amazing sounding film I have been hearing about.

I was completely underwhelmed.  There was no volume and no bass! To the point I recalibrated my system! Still the same after this.

I have a Denon x4400h  Atmos capable receiver. But at the minute it wouldn't even be capable of accepting an Atmos track and down mixing to the bed layer as I only have 5 speakers connected.

Not sure if this is the issue or if the is just an issue with the sound of this movie on sky in general has anyone else experienced this? If so does anyone know of a fix?

SKy are very hit & miss when it comes to notifying whether something has Atmos or not

I have just started to download & watch it

I do have a full Atmos set up (7.1.2) and my receiver does correctly show it as Atmos

Atmos is on top of the base  - so it shouldn't be a problem with your receiver.

My initial impressions totally back up your thoughts for this - needs significantly ramping up on volume & even when you do the bass is heavily lacking - I am not sure how much I will watch of it

Try Godzilla vs. Kong, Zack Snyder's Justice League, and A Discovery of Witches and let us know how they sound. Thanks.

hi @Kevin+7.1

What version of the film are you watching / referring to

Is it UHD HDR, UHD (non SDR) or HD ?

Are you using DD+ or just DD ?

What Signal does your Amp report it is getting ?

I sometimes, if not often, find that SKY movies have lowish volume - particularly compared with the streaming platforms, and can need turning up

@Kevin+7.1

I've just tried the UHD HDR version and it's playing fine with a full and spacious surround mix being received as DD+ Atmos by my amp.  The opening sequence on the boat has a lot of bass thump and the lightning bolts during the later storm scene have similar oomph.

Shame the actual film is terrible.

The HDR is pretty standard, fairly mediocre HLG as is typical of Sky. Doesn't have much visual punch to it.

Re: Why is the sound of Monster Hunter So Bad?

The sound through my soundbar, as was the PQ to my tv, was sublime. In other forums it has also been noted the HLG format Sky uses is very good. But then you need a tv that can take advantage of it and automatically adjust to the correct picture settings..

Re: Why is the sound of Monster Hunter So Bad?

@nigea99 I was watching the 4k HDR version. I did turn the sound up but it still sounded hollow and thin. My receiver was showing Dolby digital plus . But not Atmos as I only currently have 5 speakers connected. Dont know if this is going to turn out to be an issue of my receiver telling the q box it is Atmos capable but an issue being caused because it can't currently decode Atmos because of the way it is set up?  Can I ask if if your sky q box tells you when you are browsing if a program has an Atmos track? I am sure mine doesn't currently. which I would expect it not to unless I added another two speakers!

I will try the suggested movies and see how I get on.

Re: Why is the sound of Monster Hunter So Bad?

@cuke no issues with the picture just the sound, hopefully it's just the Atmos issues

It's a good way to test your system with sources that are supposed to have a good Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

I have just upgraded my box to an HDR version so only had a A Discovery of Witches to compare it to on this box (although I have watched plenty on my non HDR box previously)

A Discovery of Witches sounds great at my 'normal' volume (one of my favourute programmes)

I have just started to download Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring  (which has a really great Atmos track) and a brief check of that for me it is like chalk & cheese to Monster Hunter (but it is a mega download)

BTW I don't know if the HDR version was different & whether they improved the sound but the first versions of Zach Snyder's Justice League were also quiet & a bit lacking imo  but not as bad as Monster Hunter  (as I say it may have improved since I watched it in UHD SDR)

Re: Why is the sound of Monster Hunter So Bad?

Tried the suggested movies and shows, no issues with the sound. So it must just be monster hunter with issues. 🤦🏾 trolls, Discovery of witches, Snyder cut, matrix all sounded good
