When I renews my contract I removed multiroom and sent the box back and was assured I could still watch on my IPad but this does not work

Afraid you need Q Multiscreen monthly subscription to access Q box content on Phones or Tablets etc. These are considered extra screens.
However you can still watch Sky Online content with the Sky Go App
