What has happened to UHD!?! HLG is CRUD
UHD was pretty good on our TCL 50" UHD but now we have HLG which takes ages to load and is like watching football in the dark with sunglasses on!
what is going on? I've only had the TV a year... is it them or us...?
I pay for UHD ... not the pit of gloom!!!

@Colonicus wrote:...but now we have HLG
Can you explain what you mean?
Sky's HDR (not UHD) uses HLG.

Have you changed display settings? Try changing it from 10bit to 8bit.

Re: What has happened to UHD!?! HLG is CRUD
Which TCL model is this?
For information, Hybrid Log Gamma is one version of High Dynamic Range. Where a television set doesn't have the peak brightness to do justice to HDR the overall image tends to darken when it is enabled and so can be perceived as looking worse than the Standard Dynamic Range version of the same content despite them being an identical resolution (which is typically Ultra High Definition)
Sky uses HLG HDR because it's bandwidth-efficient and royalty-free: the other major formats are HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. The onscreen message is being generated by the television set to tell you which version of HDR it has detected in the UHD data.
BT Halo 3+ Ultrafast FTTP (500Mbs), BT Smart Hub 2

Re: What has happened to UHD!?! HLG is CRUD
@Colonicus The TCLQM5K can only achieve a 2% Peak brightness of around 484 cd/m2
The TCLQM6K can only achieve a 2% Peak brightness of around 544 cd/m2
These sets would only produce a dim HLG HDR image, so set your Sky Q receiver to provide a 2160p 8 Bit signal to your TV
Whereas The TCLQM7K can produce a 2% Peak brightness of around 1312 cd/m2
The TCLQM8K can produce a 2% Peak brightness of around 5658 cd/m2
These sets should be capable of producing an adequate HLG HDR image when correctly configured, so set your Sky Q receiver to provide a 2160p 10 Bit signal to your TV
Godfrey.

Re: What has happened to UHD!?! HLG is CRUD
Don't really understand that BUT why is sky UHD becoming HLG when I click on it?
I pay for UHD but get this rubbish instead, I used to get a great picture with UHD
so basically I should cancel my subscription.
Are the others like Virgin also using this HLG? I might change if so... shame after over 20 years but this is not delivering UHD

Re: What has happened to UHD!?! HLG is CRUD
As explained above UHD (resolution) and HDR (colour) are different things.
Try resetting to 1080 first by hitting 'Home 1 0 8 0 Home' and then changing to 2160P/8 bit.
HLG is common HDR for broadcast.

Re: What has happened to UHD!?! HLG is CRUD
I'll give it a go when I get home but I'm a 73 year old female pensioner that likes to switch on and watch... which I have been doing till this started!
it worked before... doesn't work now!
I've no idea about switching to 8 bit except it wouldn't do it when I last tried. I'm not an TV engineer... don't get these BITS and tech stuff...
i am not getting what I had before so I'm certainly not paying for it. I'll see if I can get UHD without this crappy HLG from other suppliers.
i signed up for TV not rocket science! Just want to watch a programme... clearly too much to ask for!
As it is... UHD that is crud, endless repeats of ancient programmes and hundreds of daft game shows giving away nothing, celebrity rubbish, adverts for charity begging, death and cremation.., none of it is worth what I'm being charged!
Thanks folks ... but it is has gotten far too tech for me!
you could say my UHD problem is a Timothy Leary situation...
TURN ON - TUNE IN - DROP OUT!
maybe that's the issue... not UHD but LSD

There has been no change to Sky's UHD service, HDR programmes have always been in HLG format. If you're suddenly having picture problems then something has changed at your end.

'far too tech for me' you will just have to change your Sky Q receiver to supply your TV with an 8 Bit signal instead of a 10 Bit signal.
