Re: V2 power bank

But it's not just that cable  is it, it's all cables, new or old that they don't supply.

If they can use Royal Mail and dpd logistics chains for boxes/remotes, why not cables?

You think the best way to get replacement cables to people is for engineers to drop them off because they will be driving around anyway?

How do you suggest they get a replacement cable to me?

This seems to be going round in circles. There's nothing in answer to your questions that hasn't already been said.

I probably would have been caught out by this if I was ever sent a v2. Luckily jumped from a v1 to a v3.

I think I'd read there was an external power brick with the v2 but I bet I'd have forgotten when the guy came to the door.

I think it's either under a cardboard flap or a lower internal section in the box, so easy for courier and customer to miss in a rushed doorstep swap.

'boxes/remotes' would have been designed into the logistics chain from the start as individually warehoused and trackable items that have a matching Support data entry point for order and despatch.  That's how inventory management on this scale (with tens of millions of items in circulation) has to work.

I think the key is what happens at the door step.

When we had our box swapped a few months ago, I'd already boxed up our old SkyQ box, so when the DPD guy arrived he took the entire new Sky Q box out and gave it to me and put the already boxed Sky Q box into his "wrapper" box.

NB.  I didn't have the original Sky Q box BTW, I'd just boxed it up in another box we had with bubble wrap etc.

I guess if most people don't do this and so they're putting the old Sky Q into the new Sky Q box, it's no wonder cables etc. are missed as those boxes can be mazes with all sorts under flaps etc.

Although I will say as a recipient of a v2 box...  Who's idea was that bespoke power box/cable?  Even if you need the external box, why the bizzarre 9 pin old MIDI looking connector rather than something more standard?

I know nobody on here can answer that, just talking out loud 😉

Actually I think we can.

The first Q boxes were manufactured during 2015 and launched in early 2016 with built-in Powerline networking hardware intended to supplement WiFi.

https://advanced-television.com/2016/01/26/airties-supercharges-sky-q-wi-fi-devices/

The v1 Q Silver (2TB UHD but not HDR) had a bit of an issue with overheating (particularly if WiFi was struggling) so when the next 2TB version was manufactured (2016-17?) the transformer was shifted outside the main enclosure.

However, built-in Powerline was still an aspiration at the time (appearing as a user-accessible option in the 'secret' installer menu, although never activated by Sky themselves) and that doesn't work through a 'normal' transformer connection, so it appears Sky specified a much more complex set of hardware with all those pins and a very chunky external unit, presumably at some considerable cost.

By 2019 and the launch of the 1TB UHD/HDR model the transformer was back inside the main enclosure and Powerline was long gone, but its legacy remains in the v2 PSU interface.

@AnytimePlus+On+VM I agree that its the doorstep swap that causes the problem with cables not being handed over

The reason for the change to the  power cable was due to the power supply being removed from the box, the original V1 box and the V2 also had integrated powerline technology built into them (this was never officially activated) I think (my own thoughts nothing official)that removing the power supply was to cool the box down a bit or that the internal power was affecting the powerline but Sky still wanted the powerline to work so came up with this cable that would power the box and allow the powerline to work as well hence the need for the bespoke cable.

The V3 boxes never had the integrated powerline so hence the reason they went back to an internal power source

You know, I never thought of that.  There were those reports from ham radio operators of weird RF spikes...

Re: V2 power bank

Ah, I'd completely forgotten about the integrated power line stuff, that makes some sense.
