Don't be silly the original recording doesnt have a "signer" standing in the front of the "scene" it's added as an edit, the signed version should be an opt-in

Hi @rtb   But it is not the original recording, is it? It is an edited version with the signer in front of the "scene". You need to find and download the unedited version, if it is available.

This does not explain why the first few (or many) programmes in a series are recorded without being signed and then subsequent ones are.  According to the BBC when I complained about this (as noted at various places above in this post) they said it's nothging to do with them, as both versions, signed an unsigned, are supplied to SKY and it's SKY that's getting it's knickers in a twist, though they did not exactly phrase it like that!

It wasn't an attempt to explain it. That's something you can raise with Sky's Viewer Relatioms team. You can email them at: viewerr@sky.uk

I did.  They said it was down the BBC.  I'm tempted to believe the BBC as SKY customer service tends to be manned by script readers in Bangalore.

Re: Unwanted sign language in recordings downloaded

This definitely should be an Opt-In for those who want it.

The vast majority of people do not want a reduced sized tv screen and huge  person Directing Traffic in the lower part of the screen.

Deaf people should have to press a button to get the deaf version; otherwise it should be the proper version that we have all paid for.

Re: Unwanted sign language in recordings downloaded

This is disgraceful.

Still happening in 2025.

Dont want sign language. Don't need it.

Why is it the only option when downloading through Sky. Utter nonsense.

@Luis+Suarez have you made sure you are downloading the correct version  normally BBC or ITV(as these are the only 2 companies I know that use this system) supply Sky with 2 version signed and non signed .

Signed versions normally state SL in the programme description. As Sky receive them from the companies mentioned I'd complain to either veirer relations at Ske which is viewerR@sky.uk or the companies direct

Re: Unwanted sign language in recordings downloaded

BBC are doing it again

Pointless at 5:15 pm weekdays - its using Sign language with a half sized viewable screen (like a picture frame on the wall) - the rest of the screen is taken up by a man waving his arms around !

This is the future of BBC - No choice in the matter - non selectable signing

Why can't they make it selectable ?

Re: Unwanted sign language in recordings downloaded

How are you watching it? I've never seen any signing on the main 17:15 showing of Pointless

Edit: Looking into it further there were deaf contestents taking part on 31st March, 1st and 2nd April and these episodes were signed as a result. It's back to normal today.

Yesterday's show on BBC1 at 17:15 was signed and the TV Guide started with something like - Signed Pointless

Edit : I see you have spotted that & posted whilst I was typing

The tone of some of the responses here to experiencing the way that deaf people have to experience every TV show, when it's even available, is pretty shocking.

I also agree I've held my tounge for a while now with regards to some of the comments.

Maybe i'm more empathetic as my wife uses hearing aids and although she doesn't need signing I know some of the struggles she has gone through with hearing etc.

It would be very interesting to see how peoples attitude changed if they lost their hearing and needed signing it may be different I expect.
