Hi.
Just to check if anyone in ROI who has UHD with Sky please.
I have been in contact with Sky Ireland who will charge 155 euro for a different box if I sign up to UHD with them. The lady said that I will get any channel which is already HD in UHD.
So if anyone in Ireland on this forum has UHD maybe revert.Wondering if the reception/ clearer picture with UHD is worth it with the extra cost for a different box and the monthly increase in rental of UHD?
Many thanks.
hi @mandysmate
These are not UHD channels (only the sports ones we mention are) but I guess this is right in one way
If you have a 4K box then either your TV will upscale the HD (&SD) channels to be 4K or your SKY Q box will do this.
Thus the SKY Q box when set to UHD will do this upscaling - your TV will already be doing this if you have a 4K TV and watching HD or even SD. Upscaling, of course, is not the same as showing native UHD content.
Some people actually prefer the image that the TV upscales from SD or HD material over the that from the SKY Q box but there is no dynamic setting on the SKY Q box and you have to switch it between 2160p (UHD) & 1080 when you switch between the UHD & HD /SD content
I leave my box to do the upscaling & do not notice a difference if my SKY Q box upscales or whether my TV upscales.
BTW it sounds like you don't currently have a UHD box - the charge is likely to be this - in the UK it is £99 (there were discsounts for self install but recently it does seem these discounts are not generally available)
It really depends on what your expectaions are and how much you are likely to watch the sports in UHD or the Films/entertainment downloads. Some people (myself included) think it worth it but others actually feel it may not be
BTW I might add I am also swayed by the fact that I have a good Surround Sound system which allows me to fully benefit from the Dolby Atmos sound that is only availble on some UHD content

As I am from the UK I don't know what content differs for Ireland
The only UHD channels as such are 401 SKY Sports Mix UHD & 406 SKy Sports F1
Other Sport such as Football & Cricket which aren't being shown on 401 may be available in UHD via the Red button or SKY Sports Menus
Occasionally Eurosport events have also been available via the Red button
Edit : UHD is available via the Red button on Eurosport Coverage for the Australian Tennis Open currently
UHD Films & Entertainment programmes are not shown on channels / live and are available via downloads only
P.S. I think some TNT sports may be availble in UHD but as I don't subscribe I am not sure

Re: UHD in Republic of Ireland
The broadcast is the same for everyone. It's the same satellite. Your box decides what you can see and I think for UHD it's the same for UK and Ireland. Not much. Of course the streaming apps can do UHD as well. TNT Sport Ultimate on 463 has some 4k stuff.

Re: UHD in Republic of Ireland
That is wandering dangerously close to mis-selling in my humble opinion.

Re: UHD in Republic of Ireland
Hi Nigeria.
Thanks for that.
I have an LGC3 65 inch 4K TV which I got in Nov 23.On getting this I decided to get HD especially for Sports.
I don't have a UHD box (not sure what a UHD box is).I have a SkyQ box.Sky say needs to be updated to a different Sky Q box for 155 euro to get UHD.Tye engineer will come to install this.
I have HD just recently and that's on a lot of channels. That costs 10 euro p/m
If I get UHD this will be another 4 euro p/month.
As you say it depends on how I feel about it.
I have a Bose Solo System as sound enhancer. Was thinking of upgrading this as its 11 yrs old.
Am considering Sonos Beam Gen 2.
Thanks again.

FYI to see which box you have look in:
Home - Settings - System Info - Hardware Version
If it is 32Cxxx then you have an older 1TB non-UHD Box
If it is 32B0xxx then you have a (V1) UHD but non HDR 2TB Box
If it is 32B1xxx then you have a (V2) UHD HDR 2TB Box (which has a separate Power supply)
If it is 32B2xxx then you have a (V3) UHD HDR 1TB or 2TB Box
I think it is the HDR on the UHD that makes a big difference - I think you will notice it on such a TV (Assuming you do not regularly use the really processed TV modes that really brighten a standard image )
I am sorry I can't give any advice regarding your plans to possibly upgrade to Sonos Beam 2 although I think it is well thought of & for a Sound bar one of the top models
(I have always had a separate AV amplifier and separate speakers that have profilerated over the years to now give me a 7.1.2 system)

Re: UHD in Republic of Ireland
Personally I think UHD/HDR (the latter has even more of an impact than the increased resolution imho) is well worth €4 a month but you have to go into it knowing the UHD content is limited.
I've watched some absolutely terrible movies just because they were available in that format 😆 But also stumbled on some great stuff like Lazarus and Code404 that future cop comedy with Stephen Graham and Daniel Mays.

Re: UHD in Republic of Ireland
Just a very small point to add on this. In Ireland we don't get main event UHD swapped into 401. It's still banished down at 858 and there is usually a prompt to watch in UHD when watching on 401.
Again just a minor clarification.
