UHD HLG HDR Picture is So Poor

I have both Sky Sports and TNT Sports on different boxes, both with UHD, but the Sky HLG HDR picture recently is terrible. Watching the matches the picture quality starts out good but 5mins in you can see the colours on bright/luminous shirts deteriorate until they look so washed out. Switch stations and then go back the picture goes back to normal for another 5mins.

This isn't an HDMI issue because it only happens on Sky through my satellite. The same shirts/high vis jackets on TNT Sports stay perfect throughout the match. Neither is it my TV as I have 2 LG OLEDS and 1 Samsung QLED and the same thing happens with Sky HLG HDR on all of them.

Anybody suffering the same issues or know a solution?

Unfortunately not, watched Shazam 2 last night and the PQ was fine.

Is this with live sports, have you tried alternative Sky HDR content?

How can you be watching UHD HDR on 3 different TVs with Sky Q when only the main box supports it?

Re: UHD HLG HDR Picture is So Poor

Seriously?????? I tried the 3 different TVs through my Qbox to see if I could find the issues. TVs can move you know........unbelievable. If you can't answer the question I'd prefer you didn't write anything thanks

😄 Surprised anyone would go to those lengths especially with a pretty delicate OLED.

Sounds to me like maybe a faulty box. Very strange. Never noticed any degradation after a period of time.

It's really frustrating because it's so obvious. Never any issues with any other HLG HDR content, just Sky Sports live. I'm determined to get to the bottom of it 🙂👍

Yeah, I'm the same with movies, just Sky Sports, everything else is good

Hmm. I binned off Sports to save money but football and F1 were always ok (though my memory is hazy if football was in HDR when I last had it)

What happens if you use 8bit colour? All stays stable? Does the signal go direct to the TV or via anything else?

Re: UHD HLG HDR Picture is So Poor

Everything is straight to the tv. F1 has never been an issue and this with live football has only recently happened. I've had UHD for a couple of years with no issues until now. Although I've always said that TNT UHD picture is far superior. The reason I got Sky UHD was because their HD picture was terrible compared to BBC, ITV etc. I watched an FA Cup match on BBC last week and their HD picture was only marginally worse than SKY UHD.

I've escalated this as it seems quite unique. Watch out for a coloured chat bubble once the sky online team send you an invitation.

Re: UHD HLG HDR Picture is So Poor

I get the exact same problem whilst watching sports.

Only occurs when using Sky Q and a HDR picture.

The occasional UHD premiership game as not been in HDR and they are fine.

Doesn't happend when watching F1 though, or any of the TV's built in apps.

In my case, I can't entirely blame Sky though, despite it only happening with Sky it is a "feature" of (in my case a Sony) OLED's called Automatic Brightness Limiter.

The TV reduced the brightness to protect the lifespan of the screen.

There are lots of moans about ABL out there.

I'm guessing this might be the same on your Samsungs?

Re: UHD HLG HDR Picture is So Poor

I've heard this about ABLs. That is looking like it could be the front runner I think. But the picture quality drops of that much that I'll cancel Sky's UHD. My guess is the stupid bright luminous shirts that one team or the officials wear is scaring the OLEDs because they're so bright

It would do this with all HDR content though, not just with HLG..
