I'm currenty on TV Essentials package as I cannot get Sky in my temp accomodation. I've bee using apps and watching recording now suddenly I can't as I get the message "to use this service you need a satellite signal"?

The box will only work for a limited time without a satellite signal. If you don't have one, unfortunately there's nothing you can do.

As @xenon81 indicates, Sky satellite receivers with hard drives have always needed a periodic refresh of subscription information over the satellite dish because this ensures they aren't being used as offline playback devices after a subscription has ceased.
