The future of Sky Q

I know there have been other discussions on this topic on this site but I am getting very confused.

Will Sky continue with Sky Q boxes and Sky dishes and if so for how long.

I am rather worried, because like me, when your Sky Q box goes wrong it seems Sky more often than not, replace it with a reconditioned Sky Q box and not a new Sky Q box, which seems to suggest Sky may no longer be making Sky Q boxes.

I know someone who has a Sky Glass tv and he kept on losing reception because he has a weak WiFi signal and gave up on it.

I know Sky streaming boxes are the future..However this is similar to Digi voice. If you lose your WiFi signal you will be without a landline phone and television.
At the moment, If I lose my WiFi signal,  Sky Q can still operate re live television and recordings and I will still have my land line phone..

I also think, if Sky abandons Sky Q and Sky dishes, there will be chaos with so many customers unless Sky give sufficient notice.

Sky has never owned the broadcast satellites at 28.2E: if these aren't replaced by SES or another set of investors before the end of their operational lifespan (around the turn of the decade) then satellite television broadcasting to the UK simply cannot continue to be a thing.

Realistically satellite television is a 1990s technology from long before high speed domestic internet access was conceived of: 2029 would be the 40th anniversary of BSkyB, at at present that's as far as the current Sky contract with SES goes.

Quite possibly: it's worth remembering that Q is nearly nine years old, and was the last product from Sky Group as an independent company before its acquisition by the Comcast Corporation (a cable television and internet business with no history in satellite television) in 2018.  Stream is very much a Comcast technology.

Wifi is variable and somewhat unpredicatable, but is not the same as broadband speed which isn't subject to local environmental conditions. My Glass TV and streaming Puck (the streaming box you referred to) are no less reliable than Sky Q was.

I do agree with your point about the effects on streaming and phone services of broadband disruption. Hopefully that will be mitigated over time by the rollout of full fibre which is inherently more reliable.

I've no doubt Sky will give customers adequate warning of the switch off of the satellite service when the time comes. Already they're encouraging customers onto Sky Stream as an alernative.

There are still a few years left n the Satellites

Even if SKY are issuing refirbished machines I am sure they will, also, manage to provide a service for while yet

Thus I would not concern yourself at this stage & broadband & stream will no doubt have improved by the time there is a need to switch

Presumably one clue might be when two year minimum terms are no longer mandatory for new users or renewals.

Thank you all for your postings.

Summary 

1) Sky it is hoped will continue to support Sky Q  to at least 2029 and perhaps beyond. They will not be doing away with Sky Q any time soon.

2) When Sky replace a faulty Sky Q  box,  it will usually be a refurbished Sky Q box and not a new  Sky Q box

3 It is hoped the Sky streaming   boxes will improve before the switch off of Sky Q, though the inability to record programmes is not good.

4. This will not be an easy project for Sky as I suspect there are millions of Sky customers like myself who have Sky Q boxes and watch television through Sky dishes 

5) Finally,  I suspect like myself there are many other people who are very worried that when the only way to watch Sky is through a streaming box and to have a landline phone through Digi Voice, the authorities can explain what happens to households if they lose their broadband connection due to a faulty router etc. They will then be without television and a landline, though I am sure there are many people like myself who have as a back up their television connected to an aerial.

I hope the above is a correct summary.

As a footnote. I think it would be a good idea if Sky were to make a statement as to the future of Sky Q and Sky dishes.

@middlesex1993  It's doubtful Sky will make any public statements about this until much nearer the time as things can change in the next 4 years.

It's more likely if there isn't going to be any replacement satellites at 28E Sky will say something nearer the time.

My sky Q is via my modem as I have fiber to the house.I do not use a dish but get my sky via my broadband connection. Why are people saying you have to have the sky dish to watch with skyQ when this is not so......????

Then you have Sky Stream, not Sky Q.

I have sky  box as well as smaller satalite boxes in each of my two upstairs bedrooms ? Sky street was not about when I bought into sky Q so I don't think I have ever signed up for sky streaming..?
