TNT Sports Ultimate not 4K - Forest Vs Chelsea

The game is 100% upscaled and not the first time I've noticed a PL game which isn't 4K HDR on TNTSU. What's the deal here? Sky Sports PL games are always 4K HDR.

The TNT Sports Utimate game is clearly not native 4K. There is nothing wrong with my setup as other games are shown native 4K on TNT. This game and a few others, I've noticed, are not.

I think you are missing the point.

We are just saying that if the broadcast on Q is in 1080p upscaled, this is down to TNT Sports, not Sky.

The game is clearly available in native 4K UHD on the app across multiple platforms, I know, I am watching it.

So, I just realised I have the Discovery+ app on both my TV and Sky box. It has 4K HDR replays of PL and CL games, including today's Forest Vs Chelsea match.

So I tried both apps and the quality was exactly the same as the live transmission earlier today. It looks nothing better than upscaled 1080p even though the playback was definitely telling my TV it was 4K HDR.

I also tried all the other games advertised as UHD, with exactly the same results. The video quality is not a patch on that delivered by Sky Sports.

I subsequently discovered a thread where others feel the same and noted that the quality has dropped recently:

Good to know it's not just a Sky Q problem.

Hi @kwangomango   Have you checked that your format is still set to 2060p 10bit. Clearly 4K HDR here, my TV reports 4K HDR(HLG) DD+. There is a massive difference between this and the HD channel, just flick between the two. In either case, this is TNT Sports, and not Sky.

It's being broadcast as 4K HDR, but it is an upscaled 1080p source - not native 4K HDR. I'm watching on a 77 inch LG OLED.

Just look at the edges of the players on the far side of the pitch compared to the QPR - Millwall game on Sky Sports 401 UHD. It's a night and day difference.

Hi @kwangomango  Sorry, no difference here, apart from the Sky match is a little bit darker. I would get your satellite dish alignment checked, as TNT Sports is always the first to show some deterioration. I can only repeat, TNT Sports broadcasts, have absolutely nothing to do with Sky. You need to complain to BT/EE if you are not happy. TNT Sports Ultimate picture is perfect on my top of the range Sony.

Sky will be taking that feed from TNT Sports and will have no control over it.

I can watch on Discovery+ in 4K UHD and others have been watching in Dolby Vision via the app. It is fairly easy to spot upscaled content as you can tell and the app feed is clearly not upscaled from a 1080p source.

Hi @kwangomango   Sky Q box 32B2xx. I'm sorry, we can only report what we are seeing, clearly not 1080p upscaled, but native 2060p 10 bit HDR(HLG) DD+.

Yes, Sky are broadcasting it as 2160p 10bit HDR DD+, but the feed the from TNT is only 1080p. Sky are upscaling to 2160p 10bit HDR like they often do with US sports where no native 4K feed is offered.

Re: TNT Sports Ultimate not 4K - Forest Vs Chelsea

Sure. My question however is on a Sky Q forum. Thanks for letting me know it's available native 4K elsewhere.

Sky are not responsible for TNT's output it is Discovery who own the channel.

Perhaps reach out to them?

Re: TNT Sports Ultimate not 4K - Forest Vs Chelsea

There has been talk elsewhere that at least some of TNT Sports Ultimate's football coverage is 1080 upscaled this year. The upscaling will be done by TNT Sports (part of Warner Bros Discovery at the moment) who will be responsible both for the satellite signal and that fed to their apps [and other providers].

The one advantage is that the bandwidth will be a lot higher than the HD channel, plus HDR / HLG, so at least it should look better, but assuming true nowhere near as good as a real UHD picture.
