hi @will28

It is still a few year away.

Who knows but personally I suspect not.

If they do, I don't think SKY Q  would retain local recording so not a great advantage in keeping ageing hardware

@will28  I doubt the Sky Q satellite boxes could be converted to stream devices as the technology inside is different to stream.

Even if they could they would disable local recording as stream isn't designed to have local recording but cloud/on demand for catching up on previous shows etc.

Re: So if sky Q is ending will they....

Just seemed to me to be the most logical thing to do,easier and quicker to change, upgrade, disabled things by a software update then getting millions of sky customers to return and order new hardware.

Since sky Q you can already get on-demand,catch up and netflix etc.

@will28  Sky Q were never intended as IP delivery boxes, so won't be as easy as people seem to think.

Had Sky Q IPTV boxes been released in the UK then that would have been a different matter entirely and could have been converted to the stream platform, however they didn't and went straight to stream pucks instead.

Re: So if sky Q is ending will they....

Ok, so they most likely couldn't do it via software upgrade and just giving us the software via an app like sky go,netflix, Amazon etc probly to messy a solution or wouldn't work?

Ummm hopefully they'll just switch everyone over for free but either way hope they remove the requirement to pay to skip ads like you can on sky Q (fast forwarding recording)

Because the television advertising market is currently doing so well that it doesn't really need the viewers?

Re: So if sky Q is ending will they....

Isn't sky q box like a basic computer, so could overwrite the sky Q software replace it with sky steam with tweak to disable user access to the harddrive etc.

I dunno just thought easier then sending out new hardware to everyone and save customers the hassle of sending hardware back.

Anyway whatever happens hope there is no extra cost with sky q ending for us who knows said everything to say on this topic now lol

Presume you've just not bothered reading the replies as you're basically asking the same question again.

What, like a Commodore 64 was a "basic computer", why don't they just "overwrite the software" so it can take man to mars! 😜

I am just another Sky customer!

You also need to factor in corporate politics: Q was the last product from Sky as an independent British satellite television company, and Stream is a Comcast Corporation hardware  / software / server platform.

While it seeems a sensible idea, the software won't work because the hardware is completely different. It would be like trying to switch every Android phone in the world over to iOS. Also, for just one example, the minis can't do 4k and Stream pucks can, so the product would be worse.

as for the idea we'll get ad skipping for free when no other Stream owner does, well good luck with that.

In 2019, Sky did produce a "Sky Q via internet" box for Sky Italia aimed those that couldn't have a satellite dish. It was based on the original V1 non-UHD box which was available in partnership with one of the Italian full fibre broadband providers.

Personally I think repurposing existing Q boxes as full IPTV boxes would be one way to go because it has already been done..

The Sky Q over IPTV boxes are not the same internally as the Sky Q satellite boxes at all, therefore the UK boxes can't be repurposed as already mentioned in previous posts.

The IPTV boxes in Germany have been or are in the process of getting Stream software on them  as these are compatible.
