My Sky Sports contract is coming to its expiration date & I don't want it to continue, do I have to cancel or will it just stop automatically?

It won't stop automatically. It's your discount that's ending, not your contract. To remove part of your TV package you will need to contact Sky and give the appropriate 31 days notice. Be aware if you still have 'in contract' discounts you may not be able to remove them.
Select ‘Need more help’ at the bottom of the following link which will lead to contact details.
https://www.sky.com/help/articles/cancel-sky-tv#contact-leave
(Make sure the flag in the bottom right corner is the correct one ie; UK or ROI).
UK customer ~ The link may include an email link and also a Message Us option (which is normally available between 9am and 7.30pm).
ROI customer ~ it’s only by calling Sky Ireland or writing in.

Re: Sky sports contract expired, don’t want it to continue.
Thanks for the info. I tried to phone to cancel but I'm told I have to ring on the day the discount stops, so I've backed that up with an email.

Not sure the email (what address did you use) will be of any use, Sky don't usually respond to email communication

You have to give 31 days notice - so waiting until the day the discount ends will cost you.
Also, you may get charged a premium subscription cancellation fee of around £40.

When does your discounted deal end?

Then I suggest you call again. As stated by @PandJ2020 you will need to give the appropriate notice so you will incur a part month at full price.

Myskycom. They won't let me put the sky bit after my. I did get an automated response saying they aimed to reply within 24hrs, that was Monday, no answer from them yet🤦🏻♂️

You cannot cancel via email anyway.
You might have some luck via the chat: https://www.sky.com/help/articles/cancel-sky-tv
But I believe you've been misled as you should have given notice about 3 weeks ago...
