Sky q minis not connecting if main box is wired

Hi all 

I'm a newbie here so please excuse my ignorance with all things tech.

I have a sky q main box and 2 minis upstairs and a third party isp

all work well except if I use ethernet downstairs and wifi upstairs trying not to use boosters or ethernet cables (not my decision) should I just use wifi any help would be appreciated.
